Vermont News - Dog Team Tavern Burned
Some bad news for locals and visitors alike. The popular Dog Team Tavern in New Haven (just north of Middlebury) burned to the ground overnight. I know it's premature, but here's to hoping they rebuild...the restaurant is a VT icon.

NO WAY!!!!! That place is a classic.
My brother, who lives in Vermont, is here in Buffalo at the moment. I have to go tell him.
I really hope no one was hurt and that they will rebuild! Thanks for the heads-up!

In one of the articles I read, one of the last sentences was that they do not know if anyone was in the building at the time.
I then later heard that they think the owner may have been in it as his truck was outside with his dogs in it. I don't know how true that is but I certainly hope that's not the case.
My dad said he was going to take my mom there this weekend

How sad. Another nugget of history bites the dust. Hey, everyone, lets write a eulogy. Tell us how you came to know the Dog Team. I'll start.
We were just a young, not yet married, couple when we went there in 1974. We were traveling cross country in our van. For those of a certain age... it was a real "Me and you and a dog named Boo" kind of trip. We had scrimped and saved so we could take a month off and travel cross country. We had loaded our van with camping gear, our ten month old, hyperactive, 90 pound sheepdog puppy, and lots of maps. Then we made up the trip as we went along. We ate lots of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and more canned soup than I care to think about. But, once each week we would treat ourselves to a "real" dinner. When we found ourselves in Middlebury, several people we asked told us to eat at the Dog Team. It was one of those experiences I will always remember. The historic building, the unique style of serving, and, of course, the wonderful food...yummm! All blackberry cobbler since has been judged against the luscious example I had there. Eating at the Dog Team was a big splurge for us hippy kids - but, worth every penny! I had always hoped to go back one day.

Cactushugger,
Your story is certainly more interesting than mine.
We were camping one weekend at my parent's camper in Kampersville, just south of Middlebury. My parents took me and my boyfriend there for dinner to celebrate one of our birthdays. I think it may have been mine. I had the chicken cordon bleu and it was delicious. But, I think the main even for everyone was the sticky buns and the relish wheel. I LOVED the horseradish cottage cheese.
The second, and sadly last, time we went I had to use the restroom before we left. This allowed me to view more of the building as I had to go upstairs. While I was in there I remember looking around at the claw foot tub and it just seemed like someone's home, not a restaurant...My last memory of that night was that by the time we got back to camp, I was SO full I had to put pajamas on and go to bed. It was one of those uncomfortable full feelings, but well worth it.
RIP DTT!

Oh, Ethel!
How could I have forgotten those sticky buns??? We didn't have such delectible (sp?) pastries in Colorado back then. Those were the first we'd ever had. Now you've made my mouth water! I do remember the neat relish wheels. Haven't seen one since. Do you know if that idea was originated at the Dog Team? Very clever. Thanks for reminding me.
I hope others will share their memories.

Ohmygod!!! You really shook me up!
We didn't drive up that far too often, but who can forget the sticky buns -- or the unusual way they took your name AND your order, so that when you sat down your hot soup was waiting for you?
How sad. I'm sure we'll read about it in the papers.
As an aside, those who love a cozy, comfy, little restaurant with GREAT food, might try the "White Dog Tavern", on Route 7, in Danby, south of Wallingford. We just went last night and it was fabulous, as always. One of those places where you always somehow just feel "happy" when you leave -- know what I mean? Pleasant place to dine, nice folks, great food, all of it.
Again, I do lament passing of the Black Dog...
