Vermont - Cheap Lodgings
 

Hi guys: I am planning a trip to Vermont for late September or early October to catch the fall foliage. I am finding that most of the accommodations on the traditional search sites are quite expensive. I know this is a peak time so I'm not surprised. My Question: Can any one tell me whether cheap roadside motels/hotels can be found on the roads of Vermont. You know the kind, A-1 Motel, SleepEz Motor Lodge, Frank's Sleep Inn, etc. I know down south, I'm originally from Georgia, they are everwhere. I don't need luxury as you can see. Just trying to figure out if one can just hit the road and find a cheap motor inn in Vermont in peak fall season with out reservations. Thanks.

I wouldn't go without reservations. No way, no how, unless you are young and limber and a night in the car wouldn't phase you!

Hi! We (two couples, mid 50s) flew into Hartford, rented a car, and "did" the fall foliage 3 times . . '92, '96, '98 . . . we never had reservations and we didn't have any trouble finding a place to stay, I mean nice places. <BR> <BR>You're correct in thinking the small, local, non-chains, we got great "off-season" rates, too. Just don't wait too late in the day to start looking for a place. <BR> <BR>We went up the coast road to Newport, Boston, Ogunquit, Kennebunkport, Freeport, Bar Harbor and then across and back down to New Hampshire and back to Hartford. <BR> <BR>We had great weather and a great time. <BR> <BR>Sandy

I agree w/Olive Oyl...I would NOT go w/o reservations in Vermont. Vermont is probably the most popular New England state to visit in the fall and accommodations can be hard to come by, especially on weekends. In fact, my hometown used to (they may still do this, but am not sure) used to keep a list of locals that would be willing to house stranded travellers who could not find accomodations. You will definatly NOT get "off-season" rates in Sept/Oct in Vermont-yes on the Maine coast, because summer is their "high" season and fall quiets down a lot! Anyway, point being-definatley make reservations for the weekends..mid-week isn't as tight, but don't wait until the last minute to find a place. Good luck!

What part of Vermont? The Manchester area is nice, there is a website for Manchester also. You can get some rates for ma&pa type motels, try the Wedgewood if in Manchester. It has individual small cottages, nothing fancy but probably one of the cheapest around.
