Vermont - best experiences
 

We are spending a week in Milton, VT, along the Lake and about a 1/2 hour from Burlington. Any suggestions for sightseeing and dining?

visit the Shelburne Museum, a little south of Burlington. You can make it in one day or two - it depends on your pace.It is a wonderful place.
Walk the mall in Burlington. It is full of interesting shops and places to eat.
Vermont is lovely- just walk anywhere and enjoy the beauty.

If you enjoy gardening, don't miss Gardener's Supply and their display gardens. Also just discovered Horsford in Charlotte. (they've been in business since 1892). We enjoyed just riding thru the Champlain Islands, stopping wherever. This took about 1/2 day, started from the north and ended up in Burlington for lunch. Take the ferry across Lake Champlain and visit Ausable Chasm. My husband loves ferries. Shelburne is great. Some people visit for 2 days. If you like wine, take a drive to Boyden Valley Winery for a tasting. We enjoyed the drive from Bristol over the Lincoln Gap to Rt 100. Plan it as a day trip on a hot summer day. You'll see where everyone likes to go in the river to swim. Very rocky. The place we chose you can easily wade across or wake upstream to a very deep pool/waterfalls. Older kids were jumping off the ledges. The water is cold but what fun. You'll need water shoes although some for flip flops. It looked like another popular swimming hole at the Rt 100 side but we couldn't see from the road just lots of cars parked.

Bring your passports-you could do a day trip to Montreal!

Meant to add - if you don't have passports, bring a government issued ID AND a certified copy of your birth certificates.

I forgot to mention--we are going to Montreal for 5 days after VT. Great suggestion, though.

The Ethan Allen Homestead in Winooski is another museum that might interest you
The Champlain Valley folk festival is a great event the weekend of August 1-3. Lots of good entertainment in a beautiful setting (south of Burlington on the lake at Kingsland Bay State Park)

There is a bluegrass festival in Alburg in the Champlain islands the following weekend but it sounds as though you'll be in Montreal by then. http://www.lakechamplainmusic.com/

On the way between Vt. and Montreal Fort Lennox and Fort Chambly along the Richlieu River are interesting sites

I forgot to mention the Vt Mozart Festival as another good option. Another beautiful setting at Shelburne Farms which is near but not the same as Shelburne museum
