Vermeer Show at the Met
We're going to be in New York in early May and I wanted to see the Vermeer show at the Met. I've heard it's drawing record crowds. Does anyone know if I should buy my tickets now--or can I wait and walk into the show whenever I want?

You need to reserve in advance, if you can, to get in for sure. Why would you take such a chance if the show is that important? I live in DC ... you should have seen the response here when the Vermeers were shown. People stood in line all night to get in. The NYC show is smaller, but important, and a rarety. Also, read the recent New Yorker review of the show ... very informative. But get tickets now, if they will do that for you. You cannot make any assumptions about crowds in NYC. Good luck.

There are no advance tickets for the Vermeer show at the Met, and there are no extra charges to see the show either (just the regular admission fee). So whatever you do, just plan to go first thing in the morning to guarantee the smallest crowds (more info at the Met's website, www.metmuseum.org).

Jeanne, as Margaret notes in the post above, there are no timed ticket. The Met abandonded that practice long ago.
I've been to see the exhibit twice; the first time was on a Sunday afternoon and you could barely move for the crowds. The second time, though, was on a Tuesday morning. I was at the museum when it opened at 9:30 and made a bee-line for the exhibit. I was able to spend a solid hour without any kind of crowds.
By the way, the exhibit is as good as its best reviews. Enjoy!

Hi Jeanne -- My husband and I were in New York the last week of March and saw the Vermeer show that Friday. We got there around noon and had no trouble getting in. The show got progressively more crowded as we went through, but the crowds were smaller than I remember them being at the Vermeer show several years ago here in Washington.
