Venice Beach or Santa Monica

...as a base for exploring for a couple of days in April?

Staying: Santa Monica
Exploring: Venice

Why: the hotels in S.M. are generally more upscale and Venice has some dodgy spots. But I like the atmosphere in Venice (during the day) better -- more artsy folk. Now, around the Venice canals (all residential, no hotels), it's such a great place to stroll, see interesting art and architecture -- a whole different ambiance than what you might see a short distance away on Venice Beach. Abbot Kinney is also a great walking and eating street with funky boutiques.

Thanks for that! Which area has the best nightlife?

If you want to see the nuttiest of nuts, go to Venice. I visited there for about an hour in 1985 and it was the most bizarre place I've ever visited.

Santa Monica. Stay near the Third Street Promonade. You can visit Venice during one of the days you are there.

Best nightlife is definitely in and around the 3rd street promenade. Dozens of restaurants, bars, and music clubs.

I agree with others - Santa Monica is a great location to use as a base. It is very well located, between Venice and Malibu, near freeways, easy access to Beverly Hills, Hollywood, etc. Lots of shopping, restaurants, etc.
