Vegetarian in New Orleans
In March, I'll make my first-ever trip to New Orleans. Have read several posts describing wonderful eating, and I look forward to experiencing that aspect of NO. However, I need some guidance about restaurants that would welcome (and satisfy) a vegetarian (not vegan). I expect to have some meals w/ omnivorous friends, and don't need to eat in vegetarian-only restaurants (although would be happy to know about them). I do, however, hope to have more than one or two choices on the menu.
I expect most of my eating out to be at dinnertime, but would appreciate breakfast recommendations, too. Many thanks! |
I can't imagine any restaurant in New Orleans not having a least a couple of entrees suitable for vegetarians, but here's a list to get you started.

www.happycow.net New Orleans lots of options
Cajuns make lots of nice eggplant dishes that are meat free. Indian restaurants are also a great bet. |
Thanks a lot to both of you. I didn't know of these websites and they're quite helpful. Looking forward to eggplant po'boy.

There was a huge flurry of posts here last fall about vegetarians in NO. It started with a ridiculous complaint about Emeril's but went on to be pretty useful for non-vegans. Search for "Emeril's" and "vegetarians". If you ate fish or shellfish, you would of course be home free.

Johnny's and most all po boy joints have a vegetarian po boy. Dante's offers vegetarian options. Green Goddess has vegetarian options. Most all the fine dining restaurants will accomodate you if you call ahead. August is one for sure.
