Sarah,
BTW, Thx for the site on Italy. For PPC to give advice on veggie stuff would be like me giving Melissa tips on running! 8-} |
hga,
We are egg/dairy veggies too and have been to all the islands. On Oahu, you can find all sorts of ethnic restaurants (there's a yummy Mexican place on the North Shore). If you're staying in Waikiki, go over to Duke's or the Shore Bird, they have great salad bars...and Duke's has veggie burgers! In Maui, we ate frequently at Maui Taco and also stopped at the health food stores (there's one in Lahaina and one in Kihei); they have veggie hot and cold food bars. Pa'ia as mentioned by someone else has TONS of veggie options. We stayed at the Grand Wailea and ate at their Bistro Molokini--pizza, salads, artichoke dip. In both Lahaina and the Shops at Wailea you'll find Cheeseburger in Paradise which has veggie options. We also ate at Lulu's in Kihei--again, veggie burger/fries type place. On Kauai, in the town of Koloa (near Poipu) there are several options: we ate at their Italian restaurant and their Mexican restaurant and enjoyed both meals. Up in Hanalei there is a Brazilian/Mexican restaurant that is good, plus Postcards, which is a veggie-friendly upscale restaurant. In Kapaa, we found Eggberts, which serves breakfast-style food. On the Waimea side, there's a good pizza joint. Duke's at the Marriott in Kahului has the yummy salad bar and veggie burgers. Every hotel on all the islands will have a breakfast buffet with fruit, omlettes, breads, and other veg-friendly options. Basically, we had no problems--we just ate the way we do here in California! Good luck, and have fun! |
Sansei in Kehei is pricey but they have a half price special several times a week; people will be lined up an hour ahead of opening time! Call them when you get to Maui to find out the exact days and hours for the deal!
|
Oh yeah there is is also a great healthfood store in Honolulu not Waikiki. They have good vegi lunches. I think a simple internet search would help you find them. Any locals remember the name and location? It is the largest Healthfood store on Oahu. I think it is back to the land?
Here is what I found on my simple search http://www.vegetarianusa.com/city/Hawaii.html |
Close. It's Down to Earth. Good Greek salads, hummus, yummy sandwiches.
|
We asked for veggie saimin in Kauai last summer for 2 teenagers we were travelling with. When the noodles were brought with Spam the waitress was shocked that we didn't think the dish vegetarian and suggested taking the Spam out and chowing down!
|
Spam spam spam. Yet another topic for culinary consideration but not on this thread.
Lcuy, could you please sign me up where needed? I didn't manage to get my forms in on time. Or is this too much of a protocol breach? Are there any Senior food booths? Is there a veggie gyros? Do they put spam in the noodles? |
Oh, I just thought of another good one. Crepe Fever and Mocha java, both in Ward Centre. Vegan and vegetarian fare, all yummy. Then you can go shopping afterward. Vim & Vigor in Ala Moana is also supposed to be good. And as Kalena suggests, Down To Earth......
|
Marie's behind Planet Hollywood. Maui Tacos in Kailua. The NY Deli in the Hilton has great Chelsea sandwich. There's also a spot in a temple on the Pali.
|
Hi kalena-
the noodles come either way..veggie or spam (or is it ham?). I'll check with the worker committees...do you like the food booths? also the second mailing of carnival requests may be showing up any moment! Don't you love working at carnival? I always end up seeing people I haven't seen in decades! |
Me too! But it seems like last carnival was yesterday. I do like the food booths, and will be on the lookout for the forms in the mail. Mahalo! :-)
|
Aloha all you Wild Wahines!!!
How can Melissa out eat me and yet still be so tiny!?!?!? Kalena does have me hankerin' for a massive hummus/red onion sandwich. What??? :-O Spam's not a veggie? DARN!!! |
Another Oahu vegetarian friendly choice is Volcano Joe's, on University. Zaffron near Chinatown is a good choice for delicious Indian w/ no natto. BYOB at both. There's also a Balinese restaurant in McCully I have been intrigued by. Has anyone tried it?
|
You SEE, Kal, you & Mrs. Kal really need to stop over on our island when you come to Hawaii! Meet the wild vegetarian wahines in person! Run a marathon!
Sarah--see, you need to return! I've been to the Bali restaurant, if I am thinking of the one you are thinking of.....pretty good! |
Kalena- is that the one across from Taco bell at the McCully shopping center?
I ate lunch there about a year ago. I liked it.. good food, quiet enough to have a business meeting, and pleasant service. |
Bali Indonesia is owned and operated by CHINESE (Wong Family) from Indonesia, with a cook from Java.
I've inquired about the restaurant with everyone that I've come across that was born and raised in that part of SE Asia. They all feel that the tastes and flavors are the most authentic in town. No small achievement for a venue of that kind! Look at Mongolian Barbeque. All those add-ons (roast beef, ox-tail soup, etc.) and they still went out of business. Bali Indonesia has a buffet(not quite a ristafel) that seems to have good value. No Loco Moco, though. Hmm, I wonder... |
Maybe we should have a gtg there??
|
That sounds fun. I'm sure everyone's getting very busy before the holidays, but if Kal tells us he and the Mrs. are stopping in town, I'm sure we can make time.
|
WHY IS THIS STUFF NEVER HAPPENING WHEN I AM IN TOWN!!!
|
Sarah, you should know better. The natives just need a couple of days notice and they can whip up something for you!
Just post ahead next time... |
