Vegetarian Food in Hawaii
My husband and I are vegetarians. We eat eggs and dairy, but no fish, meat or chicken. We're going to be in Maui, Kauai and Oahu for about 12 days (leaving mid-Nov). Any restaurant recommendations for reasonable-priced, good vegetarian food? We love Mexican, Thai, Indian. Thanks much!!

We're planning a Maui honeymoon and I'm a vegetarian - also no fish or chicken, but I do eat dairy and eggs.
Although we haven't been yet, based on research and looking at online menus, it looks like Hula Grill (Kanapalli), Aloha Mixed Plate (west side), Maui Tacos, Da Kitchen (Kihei, I think) and Sansei have some good choices. Sansei might be a little more expensive - I guess it depends on what you get - but the menu has some really good looking veggie rolls and veggie tempura. Many of the more casual places seem to have veggie burgers. Paia also seems very veggie-friendly.
On the more expensive side, we're planning to try Pacific'O, Roy's and Nick's Fishmarket.
I'm very interested to see if there are any responses from someone who's been to Maui ...

My husband is vegan and we'll be in Maui over Thansgiving so I've done a little research. Here are a couple of websites:

Correction to Sarah's 11/7 posting: the correct name of the restaurant is Buddhist Vegetarian Restaurant. Yes, it is a sister restaurant to Legend Seafood. Telephone (808) 532-8218.
Many Chinese restaurants in Honolulu, including the top-rated, offer vegetarian dishes. If interested in finding out more, email [email protected].

Hi Lcuy
Just strumming through the thread have not heard from you in a while. I hope you are well. Hello to you also Pake Pok Chop!
hga you will certainly have plenty to choose from in Hawaii. This is not really a meal but you want to try this snack called " mighty greens", help me out here Hawaii folk. There are two companies that make it . I think mightly greens is the originator but not sure. One is the mother company the other a rip off and weaker product. It is a type of rice cheese twist that is covered in spirulina grown on the big island. Yum Yum and yum. I am not someone that comes on to tell you about snacks but this is a good one. Ok so maybe I am someone that comes on to suggest snack foods. ... . Apart from this my suggestion to you would be to focuse on food on Oahu. You have some of the most celebrated chefs in the world on this island. If you are going to have one or two special nights out I would do it here.
PS there is a great mexican restaurant on the North Shore Haleiwa it is brand new. It's called Cholos tucked inside of the marketplace. In the same complex as Kaimainas (gift shop)which is really worth a look for quality souveniers.
In the past I have not had much success with Mexican in Hawaii but this restuarant has proved me wrong. Thai you have Keos a few locations. There is another restaurant In Waikiki area that has received the highest accolades for a restaurant outside of Thailand by the Thai government. Again Hawaii folk can you help is it Singha Thai?

Hi Sarah- thanks for asking about me! Between chairing the Punahou Carnival(Feb 6 & 7 this year), a problem with my leg, and trying to work now and then, I find myself catching up on sleep rather than checking here as often!
My trips have been rather un- exotic as well...several trips to Portland, Or and San Diego. Hope to get to India with a Japan stopover this coming summer though.
Never heard of the spirulina cheese, but it sounds interesting. I do love Cholos...great place to eat, especially with a group of friends.

Hi Lucy,
Sounds like a big job chairing that carnival. Well at least your house will see some of that chutney! It illuded me when I lived there, always sold out.
Spirulina is not a cheese, it is some kind of vegetation. They sprinkle it over what resembles cheese twist to the rest of us but it is actually a rice snack. You can buy it at most markets in the chip section. It is called Mighty Greens.
You will have to come on when you make that trip. Wow you are not deterred by the crowds and heat in Japan. That says something. Think you will just hang out in Tokyo for a few days or will you go back to Kyoto? I still have not made it to Japan. I was on the North Shore this summer though. I also just made a trip to Florence, Italy two weeks ago. I am always thinking I have to make it to Japan. That week I was in Florence fares dropped to $400. from NYC also. I think I just want to wait until the dollar gains some strength.
Have fun at the carnival. Don't forget to mention it on here as the time rolls around. I am sure folks on here would love to visit as they head towards the pali?

Isn't our chutney the BEST?? I spent the early part of summer taking kids to pick mangos and the rest of summer in the cafeteria making the chutney. Thought it would kill my desire for it, but I thoroughly enjoyed some of last years production the other day!
I actually hate going to Japan in the summer..it is sooo humid...but we plan to head for the hills..Takayama or similar area. We'll visit for a week before we head to India, which should REALLY be hot! This hinges on my daughter doing a month long exchange in New Delhi and we'll meet to travel at the end. If she doesn't get to do the exchange, we'll go to either Mexico or Ireland, and save Japan for the fall. I know we're going far, just don't know which direction!
Funny thing after mentioning Cholos yesterday -- the owner was interviewed on the news last night! Surfing season is starting and he was very happy anticipating the crowds.

You must have a cast iron stomach to even think of chutney and natto in the same dish!!! If I wasn't from here, I wouldn't have believed the weird variations on loco moco...but I know they're fo real (just some of them not fo me!)I'm just a fried rice with egg and hot sauce kind of woman...hold the gravy and patty. If you have a taste test, I'll come though!

My apologies, Sarah! I was wandering past the Buddhist Vegetarian Restaurant when its sign caught my eye: Legend Vegetarian Restaurant!
Leave it to these pakes to have one name in the telephone directory and another name on the store sign!

Legends Seafood and Roys and a new place I tried in Waikiki, Youme.n kept coming to mind especially when the tab came!!!
