Vegas to Yosemite
Is there a definitive route from Vegas to Yosemite via Death Valley. We plan to travel in early September.

If there is, I haven't been able to find out what it is. I've asked at various forums and gone to a Death Valley website (death-valley.us) which has some additional info. As is often the case, you get differing opinions.
A lot depends of the type of car you'll be driving, what you want to get out of your trip across the Valley, and how fast you want to get to Yosemite. Based on that, and the fact we're going on June 22, I've pretty much decided the route we'll take. Slightly cooler weather in September could affect your decision. When we get back I intend to post a trip report. Maybe that will help you. Until then, by answering your post you'll get boosted back to the top of the list for another chance someone else will answer you. |
Thanks, I shall look forward to reading your report, but I'm sure that there must be a route that is considered to the best by far.

The route we're taking is a variation of the recommendations we've received the most. Time played in our decision. We intend to leave Las Vegas before dawn in order to 1. reach Zabriskie Point at or near sunrise and 2. exit the Valley before the hottest part of the day. We also have other things we want to see along 395 before we overnight in Bishop.
With that in mind we chose the fastest route to the Valley that would allow us to traverse most of the scenic route recommended by AAA and others. Las Vegas to Death Valley Junction via US 95 to Nev 373/CA 127. At DVJ, CA 190 into the park. We'll take a roundtrip detour at Badwater Road in order to see the salt pools, lowest spot in the U.S., and do the Artists Point drive. Back north up Badwater to 190 and continue on 190 going west at the junction with 374. Then out the Valley and on to 395 heading toward Yosemite. Maybe someone will come up with a more definitive route. If so, I'd be interested in seeing it, too. Enjoy your trip, whatever route you take. |
Thanks again, I am surprised at the lack of interest in this thread.
