We enjoyed several of the Wolfgang Puck restaurants. The one that was in the Forum Shops (Spago) was reasonable, and we enjoyed the meal. We also went to the Wolfgang Puck restaurant in the Venetian St. Mark's Square area.

There are some terrific choices -- I have heard good things about the Paris Las Vegas restaurants as well.

Enjoy!

Thanks everyone for your help. We're back now and had some great meals thanks to Fodors! Rufus, Star Canyon was amazing, however it was sold and it closes this week...wish I could recommend it to others but it will soon be a seafood joint :( Maybe it had just too much competition from Delmonicos next door. Ate at Wolfgang Puck's cafe in MGM and it was wonderful as well. Everything I saw coming out of the kitchen there looked great! Even tried a place in the Golden Nugget which was fun (can't remember the name...I think I was too excited that my hubby actually came out ahead on the $3 craps tables at Binion's Horseshoe!). I'd be happy to answer any other questions...we walked our feet off and must have read every posted menu in every hotel!

Lotus of Siam
953 E. Sahara Ave. #A-5 (in the Commercial Center Mall)
Las Vegas, NV 89104
(702) 735-3033

in case anyone is interested in the future, this is the place referred to above. i don'think it is necessarily worth a r/t cab ride, so if you've got a car, go, if not, strip it.

hi karen,
thanks for reporting back...
we're heading to Vegas this weekend and thinking of eating at Andres (Monte Carlo) and maybe Postrio at the Venetian. Delmonicos sounds good, but steak bores me...any opinions!?
By the way, how was your hotel?
Thanks!
frankie

Frankie, hotel was fine. Couldn't beat the $55 per night room rate and the location is ideal - center of the strip. We chose a section of the strip each day to walk and hit all the hotels in that area. We asked for an upgraded room and got a nice one on the 16th floor. If I went again, I'd try to get a room with a view of the Bellagio fountains (which were the most awe inspiring sight).
If Star Canyon is still open this weekend, I would try it...everyting there looked good (fish etc). It's not just a steak place but rather a southwestern rest. We decided last minute that we didn't feel like doing the jacket and tie thing so we didn't try Andres, Picasso, Aqua etc...We found there were so many "reasonably" priced places with great atmospheres which were more casual which was just what we looked for. One place we tried to get in but couldn't get reservations was Emeril's Fish House at MGM. It might be a good idea to call this week just to try to get something for next week - you could always cancel if you find something else that suits you better. I hope this was somewhat helpful to you...anything else I can answer for you?

A couple of years ago, we had lunch at Delmonico's and I had a fabulous pasta dish and my husband had the Louisiana Crab Cakes. Both were outstanding. So they do have more than just steak.

Little_Man Jul 2nd, 2003 07:19 AM

yum! It's early but my mouth is watering! We're also not going to Picasso because of the jacket/tie thing! Andres told us a collared shirt for the men is just fine, so I think we'll try that. The reviews of this place are all so positive...
Any opinions about Postrio? And Delmonicos sounds good, too...is it dressy?
Thanks so much!

karenvk Jul 2nd, 2003 10:30 AM

I don't remember how dressy Delmonico's was but the food seemed really rich (we checked out the menu as it was directly next door to Star Canyon). You can always make the reservation and then cancel if you need to. As for Italian food, we were all set to dine at Canaletto one night (also in the Venetian) but we never got that hankering for italian while we were there. I've heard only good things about it though.

Grand Luxe Cafe *IS* the Cheesecake Factory, for Pete's sake.
The Cheesecake Factory logo is even printed on the menu.
Plus it's a chain. I just ate at the GLC in Chicago.

Lotus of Siam seems to be THE favorite low profile restaurant of choice in LV at Chowhound.com
Chowhound is a really good source of reliable restaurant reviews.

Lotus of Siam was reviewed in the Travel Section of the Sunday NYTimes about a year ago. They loved it!
We still haven't been, but plan to on our next trip!

I was in Vegas in March, staying at the Venetian, and ate at Postrio. I have to say I wasn't terribly impressed with the food.

Skipped Grand Luxe Cafe since it is the same ownership as the Cheesecake Factory as others have mentioned.

I had lunch at Delmonico's a few years back and really enjoyed my steak and sweet potato chips (or were they yam chips?) We even got a tour of the kitchen because we asked and it was a relatively slow day. We saw the chef torching our creme brulee.

Tried Mon Ami Gabi based on raves at chowhound.com but I was not terribly impressed there either. I had a better meal at one of their sister restaurants in Chicago called Wildfire. As a previous poster mentioned, you go for the view of the fountains.

Hi, we went a couple years ago, just for a couple of days, then drove to the Grand Canyon, and Sedona---had a great experience everywhere.

While at Vegas, we stayed at the Bellagio--which is so worth the money--and had a fabulous dinner at Aqua, I think it was $40-$50 per person--but we are not into desert, so maybe thats why it wasn't higher. My husband just wore nice slacks and a dress shirt, and we were fine amongst everyone else. Some people--very few I may add, were a little too casual, but who cares, you are on vacation, and just have a great time.

I can't believe no one has mentioned P.F. Chang's at the Aladdin-it's awesome and good prices.

rwilliams Jul 3rd, 2003 04:00 PM

Ummmm....the header specifies "no chain restaurants".
There are PF Changs everywhere.

ellen_griswold Jul 3rd, 2003 04:25 PM

Is Kahunaville (Treasure Island) a chain? I've never heard of it. Any info on it, such as menus, prices etc. Looking for something different (for us), fun, and definitely not too pricey. Thanks!

sbrownpac Jul 4th, 2003 06:05 AM

ok maybe it is a chain (worldwide) but we loved ROY's, off the strip by about 5 minutes. Class but somewhat relaxed, fantastic foods wines and very knowledgeable, professional staff, we we not rushed at all, and had wonderfull meals there...good for both meat and seafood lovers...hawiian/pacific rim influenced food (not the decor). give it a go....

clairelong Jul 6th, 2003 07:45 AM

Like i said, PF Changs is awesome give it a try if you haven't ever eaten there! We rave about it all the time.
