Vegas Newbie, few questions?

Hi, Though I am closer to 50 than any other big birthday, I have never been to vegas. I am going solo next week. My Conference is at Mandalay Bay, so need to be able to get back and forth if I choose to stay elsewhere.

I actually like quiet, I like nice pools, I do not like gambling or loud partying. I want to be able to afford to rent a small cabana or at least a nice chair by the pool/beach. Is there a better place for me to stay?

Right now I have a res at Mandalay Bay, which includes 3 buffet meals a day in the price of the room, which is good or otherwise I would not eat. The total for 2 nights is about 480 with tax. It is expensive bc they are holding the conference. It is much cheaper before or after...

What is best way from airport to hotel? I will be arriving at 10am PST. thanks, barbfam

The hotel is not that far from the airport--I'd just take a taxi.

We too prefer quiet, none party atmosphere. We just stayed at The Signature at MGM, they are penthouse apartments in three towers that are all connected to the MGM Grand by a long walkway, they have a few pools at the MGM, but the ones by the signature are quiet and not as crowded. They have a food court as well as many other resturants inside the MGM,and the Signature has a cafe, fridge, microwave and small cooking area in the suite. They have a balcony too(most hotels in Vegas do not), although we did have to take the chairs from inside the room onto the balcony. When we stayed it was very quiet hotel, it is a walk to get to the strip, but it was well worth it to us.

I'm 50-something too and have been to LV many times by myself for a conference. LV is one place where a woman travelling alone can be comfortable eating out, going to a show, relaxing at the pool or a piano bar, or people watching. I've stayed up and down the strip, downtown, and in Henderson. I like to stay where my conference is held. Anything else is a hassle - long walks or cabs and then a long walk from the door to the conference room.

Stay at Mandaly Bay - they have beautiful pools that won't be that busy now, especially during the week. Take a cab from the a/p to hotel - faster and more dependable than a shuttle in my experience.

Lots to do in LV besides gambling and loud partying - shows, shopping, fabulous restaurants, fountains, botanical garden, fascinating people watching. I go every year and never get tired of it. Enjoy!

I'm 50 and been to Vegas many times..some work related / some not. I agree w/ ckg, stay at the conference hotel. Besides, Mandalay has a great pool and many restaurants to choose from. Since you've not been to Vegas, I would encourage you to catch a Cirque show. While Cirque has many traveling shows, none compare to the Vegas venues. For what it's worth, Love, Mystere and O are my top three. However, whatever show you see, do not go to Chris Angel's show in Mandalay. It's been a year or so since I saw the show and am still trying to figure out a way to get my money back...it's truly that bad. Enjoy Vegas!

Barb, I agree with the above posters, stay at Mandalay Bay. I have been to vegas many times, work and play related. I like being able to walk to my hotel room any time I want, even if it means skipping out on something I'm supposed to be seeing at the convention. I also agree with seeing a Cirque show, just get a discount ticket from the ticket counter the day of the show and Cirque shows are better if you don't sit in the front seats. Bring comfortable walking shoes and enjoy the attractions up and down the strip. Enjoy your trip, ziggypop

MB is one of my favorite places to stay (I'm 48) but if you are a first time visitor, the location may not be ideal as it is at the 'end of the Strip'. There is something to be said for staying in the same Hotel as the conference however.

Taxi from the airport. I would stay at Mandalay Bay because it's a great hotel, with a very large pool area where you are sure to find a quiet spot. Mandalay Bay has a tram that links it to Luxor (I've never stayed) and Excalibur (I don't recommend), which would be easy-to-get-to options if you decide to find a cheaper rate. Ka (cirque show) at MGM is great.

If your conference is at MB, then stay there. You got a really good rate on the room!

www.cheapovegas will give you lots of funny, yet accurate, reviews of the various Vegas properties.

Thanks for all your help. I leave in 24 hours, and will take the advice of taking a cab to hotel and staying at Mandalay Bay. I love going somewhere new, so even though Vegas was never in my top 10 on my list of places to go, I am very excited and will try to see lots and do a Cirque show too.

Since this is your first trip, do share with us when you return all the fun stuff you did and what you recommend for others who may go for the first time.
Have fun.
