Vegas: Cheap Hotel w/o Compromising Quality?

8 twenty-somethings headed to Vegas in late July...

Can anyone give me some suggestions for a cheaper hotel on the South Strip... but without compromising quality and comfort? I hear some of the cheap ones can be pretty nasty. All suggestions are welcome!

Some of the 'bettter value'strip hotels include Luxor, Ballys, Harrahs, Flamingo, Monte Carlo, and sometimes Treasure Island. Of the ones listed, only Luxor is considered to be on the South Strip.
DO NOT stay at the Excalaber

We've stayed at the Luxor and more recently at Ballys. Loved Ballys and got a great deal. Call the hotel directly and ask for any promotions they are offering over your dates.

Hadn't been to Bally's in a few years and thought I'd another try 2 months ago during a very busy convention weekend. Since they have opened, we usually stay at Bellagio or Venetian, but they were sold out. Wasn't expecting Bally's to compare to these hotels, but it was truly horrible -- room, food, service. There was actually sewage coming out of the shower. We paid the same for Bally's as we usually do with the Bellagio promotional rate.

If you can get a good rate ($59 or so), try Aladdin. The rooms are fine, with big bathtubs, and the location is excellent. The casino is pretty bad, though.

Hi,
During late July all the hotels should have close to their lowest prices.

I would sign up to the hotel guest books to receive special offers by email.
Last year I got the Mandalay Bay for $89 per night in June ,Bellagio for $120, Mirage for $89, Luxor for $59) -the prices are for weekday stays and will naturally go up at weekends . All the above are very good hotels and the Mandalay bay pool/ beach area is fantastic.

Regards
TBS

Look at www.cheapovegas.com for frank reviews of all the hotels.

I've never stayed there, but The Tropicana is south strip at a good corner location, low priced, and supposed to have a fantastic pool area. The only real caveat I've heard is to make sure NOT to get a garden room - stay in one of the towers.

One thing to try is to call the Casino Host at any of the hotels you are considering and see if they can help. If you explain that you have a big group, and are all willing to sign up for players' cards (which you'll want anyway if you plan to gamble) they will sometimes cut you a deal on room rates. We've had luck at the Rio and the MGM Grand this way.

Why don't you just bid for the rooms on priceline? Bid for 4 stars.

www.orleanscasino.com

Beautiful rooms, nice pool area, good dining, and free shuttle back and forth to the strip all day. Only a 3 minute cab ride away from the strip if the shuttle's not running (after 1am).

W

what's your price range and how "cheap" is cheap to you? Treasure Island and Luxor are what I'd call mid-range for Vegas ($90-$130-what we paid)and they are definately above average. For cheap on the strip I'd say Excalibur or Circus Circus, however, these are not very nice IMO.

the poster asked for south strip.

Mandalay bay is your hotel. Large group, hotter than hades in July, you'll want to be around a world class pool, with beach, river and wave pool. that's mandalay. stay at a cheaper hotel an that's just a bad trip. also note mandalay is 109 per night in july, split 2 ways or 3 or 4 that works out to be a bargain.

Flopmeister:

You quote the original poster about wanting a South Strip hotel, and you mention MB. However, you did not quote that the poster wanted a cheaper hotel, something of good value. I'm sorry to say that MB does not fit that bill. It is consistanly one of the more expensive hotels on the strip, and besides the 4 seasons, probably the MOST expensive south strip hotel. While I agree about having a good pool for a late July stay, the MGM Grand or even the Luxor, both which have very good or great pools, would be less expensive choices than MB.

I have been to Las Vegas 3 x's and all the experiences have been good. We stayed at the Rio the first time and it is absolutely the best with it being an all suite hotel. The next time we went with a couple of friends who were on a budget and I searched for the best for the price and The Stratosphere is Holiday Inn quality. The rooms are standard and smaller than the larger strip hotels but how often are you really in your room? We just got back from Vegas and stayed at the Mirage. It is beautiful and in the center of everything but the Rio still has me sold!

Where is ncalhoun? Maybe he/she can help us by ansering a couple of questions...

-What do you consider a "cheaper hotel", given an average price per night for your stay?

-What are you looking for: the coolest pool in the land with hot clubs and restaurants..or a place with a simple pool and a room that serves as your homebase?

-Why the SOUTH strip? Is there something going on down there that requires you to stay there as opposed to CENTRAL?

Sometimes people don't NEED to stay at the best hotel in town. Different trips, different needs.

snarla

Anthony: MGM aint south in my book. Luxor and TI strictly for punters only. MB is a RESORT baby. NCALHOUN said without compromising QUALITY. I'll let you stay at Luxor. Me? Mandy, baby.
