Actually I live in Denver and have lived at Copper Mt.and have spent summers at Vail.
I don't believe I said that anything above the base of the mountain will be open. I said some lower terrain trails might be accessible. I just recently noted that the gondola won't be running until at least mid and probably late June. I did say that the bike path which runs from Vail east to Edwards and west to Breckenridge/Keystone might be open, at least parts of it. It's unlikely ,of course, that one could ride up to Vail Pass, but it is reasonable to assume that you could ride from Vail to Edwards. My last comment states that spring comes late to the mountains. Perhaps that's a bit subtle for some, but it should be conclusive enough to indicate that activities will be severely limited until late June. |
Thanks Historytraveler and Fmpden for your comments about Vail in late May. Since we are from Florida, where in late May, the temperature begins to turn from warm to HOT, it never occured to us that Vail might still have snow. We know that we should pack "wintery" clothing, but we never dreamed that the gondolas would be shut down. It is too late to change our plans, as our flight and hotels are already booked. We will be attending the graduation at the Air Force Academy of a relative, and then will proceed to Denver, Breckenridge, Vail, and Leadville and have the best time we can have under the circumstances. Thanks again for tellingh us how it really is in Colorado in the spring.

There is at least one good thing about late spring at the ski resorts and that's the two for one diner promotions offered by many of the local restaurants. I do know that in past years both Sweet Basil's and Pepi's ( two excellent restaurants in Vail) have been open during the time you'll be there. The restaurant in the Sonnenalp (also very good) should be open too.
