Vail or Breckinridge?

We are planning a trip during April vacation week.

We are limited as to where to stay because we are using my in-laws timeshare.
I have always wanted to see Aspen- but unfortunately, there are no timeshares available during that week.

I don't know anything about VAIL, CO, or BRECKENRIDGE, CO.
Is either area nicer than the other? Anything like Aspen? Pros and Cons to either place?

Here are our interests:
Hiking, Canoeing, Being Outdoors (but we don't ski)
Pubs, Breweries, Good Restaurants
Local/quality shopping
Charm, etc
My Husband would like to see Denver

Suggestions PLEASE!!
Thanks!

April will still be snowing, if it's anything like last year. No hiking, canoeing or anything other than winter outdoor activities like ice skating, snow shoeing, snowmobiling and skiing, etc.

Both have good restaurants and shopping. Vail is higher-end shopping. Breckenridge is a little bigger but still a small-town feel to it.

And, the weather gurus have predicted a Godzilla El Niño this year which will bring a lot of moisture this winter. Who know if that will happen but if winter is anything like last year there will be a lot of snow.

It is still ski season. There won't be hiking, canoeing. You can still easily see Aspen--it's a couple of hours from vail or Breck
WHERE is the timeshare, for heaven's sake.
Go to the time share and drive around the high country.

Gretchen- whats with the yelling? We have multiple timeshares to choose from. We have to narrow it down to an area first and then will choose timeshares that are available for a particular date.

Can you say what/where the Vail options are?

Gretchen Nov 2nd, 2015 03:25 AM

That wasn't really meant to be "yelling" although I recognize the option. It was meant to be an emphasis, and "now" (emphasis) you have provided the fact that you have choices not just one "timeshare".
Breck is more charming than Vail.
Are you going to stay in Denver for a while? What are your plans for your time in Colorado.

Vail is more of a planned community, albeit very nice. Breck is a legitimate mining town, turned tshirt emporium. ;) We really like Breck. I share others concerns for the timing and your interests.

Breckenridge brewery is in breck. The Dam Brewery in Dillon has good food/beer. And we have also had nice meals/beers at Backcountry brewery both more or less on the way to Breck/Vail from Denver. The Dam brewery makes a good stop before/after shopping in Silverthorne.

FYI, the Silverthorne outlet stores are still going strong, while many outlet malls have disappeared.

It would also help to know your exact dates in April. Easter weekend has a huge impact on the ski season. Since it is very earlier next year (March 27th), it may be difficult to know what will be open and closed in April. There will be very limited outdoor activities beyond snow related - skiing, snowshoeing, dog sled, but no hiking or water activity, too early.

If interested in Denver, then Breckenridge would be a better choice. Breckenridge is an authentic old mining town with other activities whereas Vail is a totally built ski town. Breckenridge is an easy hour and half drive from Denver and Vail a little over two hours but having to go over Vail pass. Vail pass can be closed because of weather.

Vail would be easier for a day trip to Aspen (2 hrs, good weather) and drive through Glenwood canyon. Aspen is closer to three hours from Breckenridge. Where the time share is in Breck or Vail might be significant.

Try not schedule travel east (to Denver) on Sunday, at least not in the afternoon.

I know you said April Vacation week. But that does mean anything to anyone but you.

It would also be helpful to know if you could fly into Vail-Eagle Airport and whether you intend to rent a car.

fmpden Nov 2nd, 2015 01:19 PM

If the husband is interested in Denver, makes no sense to fly into Vail-Eagle Airport. The time/distance between Eagle/Vail airport and Breckenridge or to Denver DIA is fairly close.
