Vacay in NJ and NY

Hi,

My husband is going to NewJersey/NY for work this coming January. My baby and I are tagging along. We will be staying there for 1 week. His workplace is somewhere in Morrisontown New Jersey. I want to visit NY, is it far from NY and how do I get there? by car? train? Also, what is there to do in that area? Lots of place to visit? historical places? please advise. Thanks!

Morristown is about 1 hour away from NYC by train. This is the website for the train service: www.njtransit.com. Morristown and its surrounding area is very historical and has a variety of activities for you to enjoy, but you will have to have a car. The website for the area is www.morristourism.org. There is a theater in town: www.mayoarts.org that may have performances while you are here.

My husband works in Morristown and knows the area pretty well. Feel free to e-mail me if you have more specific questions: [email protected]

Morristown has an NJ Transit station

I assuming you mean NYC by NY.

Have you looked at a map?

Traveling to the city for a day with a baby can be a challenge. Assuming you need a stroller you will have to deal with hauling it around train stations, up and down escalators and stairs etc.

And in Jan you can have decent weather or it can be bitter. Make sure you and baby both have proper clothing and the stroller has a weatherproof cover.

If you want to head into town with a baby do plan it out carefully and make sure to visit an area that is child friendly - streets not too mobbed and family places to eat.

It would be easier to go to the city when you are with your husband in terms of maneuvering around with a baby. (Yes, a lot of people with infants live in Manhattan - but not typically in midtown - but more residential areas - and usually don't go for full days of activities - but only for a couple of hours at a time - especially with an infant/stroller.)

We live in Madison, NJ, two stations east of Morristown on the NJTransit Midtown Direct Morristown line. Transit time from Morristown to New York Penn Station is anywhere from about 50 minutes for an express train (they run during the morning commuting hours) to about 1:15 or so during the remainder of the day. Trains run only hourly on weekends, but more frequently on weekdays. NJTransit has installed ramps at its stations to comply with the Federal ADA; thus, it is relatively easy to negotiate the Morristown station, even with a stroller. Most, if not all, of the platforms at Penn Station have elevators up to the concourse level, and there are also elevators from the concourse level to the street level.

Both barbarism and nytraveler offer good advice about the Morristown area and travel to NYC.

Thank you for all your replies.

I plan to bring my mom with me to help me out with the baby. So the majority of the time, it'll be me, my mom, and my baby exploring the area while my husband is working. Although my husband and I will probably hang out at night. But what I'm concerned most is the time spent with mom and baby. We are not familiar with either jersey or new york at all.

I will definitely take the train from morristown to nyc to visit 1 or 2 days, and spend time in new jersey and explore the area as well. Thanks again, all!

Also, I'm interested in shopping as well. Are there any good place for shopping in Morristown? What about Wee Hawken?

NJ has many malls, including the very upscale Mall at Short Hills. That would be the easiest way to shop, especially in cold weather and with a baby. Morristown also has a large branch of a favorite NYC discount store, Century 21

If you can help me out...i greatly appreciate it.

I just looked at our itinary again and it looks like we've only got 4 days total in our trip. So we plan to be spending 2 days in NJ and 2 days in NY. What do you recommend us do?

The Mall at Short Hills could be a destination for you, but it is not convenient to the Morristown NJTransit line. You'd need a car or a cab to get from the Short Hills station to the Mall. Another possibility might be taking the train into Manhattan for the day and visiting Macy's flagship store, an easy walk from New York Penn Station. While New Jersey has many malls, NYC is your ultimate shopping destination.

Shopping all over Manhattan with an infant in winter can be challenging.

Are you looking for specific things? What price range are you looking at? short Hills is primarily upscale.

Macy's - 2 blocks from Penn Station - is the largest department store in the world (a full square city block and I believe 10 or 11 stories - but have elevators so good for strollers. But this is basic modest/moderate - just in huge selections. Always sales going on - but not sure what you are looking for.

I'm sorry - I don;t see an age for the child. Is this a real infant - 4 months or less - or a toddler or? You might want to consider what to do see depending on that.

OK - so your child is a difficult age - you will need a stroller to get around but s/he will want to get out and run around - not possible in most of the city.

If you get decent weather I would head to Central Park to the small zoo - and also a children's petting zoo. And if the weather is bad the Museum of Natural History is a classic for NYC moms or nannies with tiny tots.

As for other things to do - depending on how much time you have - you might consider a ride on the Staten Island ferry (about 1.5 hours across the harbor and back - with views of the Statue of Liberty and the skyline) and also the Top of the Rock for a view of the city from above. In the same area have a look at the skaters at the Rock Center rink, or perhaps the rink at Bryant Park (and the main branch of the NY public library as well as the absolutely gorgeous Grand Central Station - with a huge food court).

I think the main thing is to watch the weather carefully - s you go to the city on the days with the best weather possible - touring is no fun in snow or sleet - especially with a toddler in a stroller.
