LOL...I use to live in Texas as a teenager and we traveled from Dallas area to Los Angeles EVERY summer!

Books, hand held electronic games and now it's so easy to have a DVD player for them.

Start out early...really early, like 3-4AM. After the initial whinning, they will go back to sleep in the car and you can put on some serious miles the first day.

After that you can play some of the games that were discussed late last week in another post.

Of course you need to put a brightly colored piece of yarn down the middle of the seat (if you have a bench seat) in order to diferentiate who's side is which. Everyone needs their space, you know ;-)

Yes it certainly does.
If you want out in the summer, Colorado mountains, San Diego, or San Miguel de Allende, MX are the best, IMHO!

Don't let them forget their music (cd's or mp3) and HEADPHONES. That way everyone gets their own sounds. You can have silence if you wish and they can each have their own music. If they will actually read (some kids do), make sure you have clip on book lights for night time driving or in the hotel after lights out or in the early morning when everyone isn't awake yet. Their own backseat supply of munchies and drinks is helpful as well. I don't know how old we are talking about here but putting one of them in the passenger seat and making them the navigator provides a change and sometimes a challenge. If you make them responsible for one day or location on your planned trip, they can do the research as you drive and tour guide once you arrive. And, when all of the educational options are met with groans, Thank God for gameboys and dvd's. Have a great trip!

There's a really fun car card game called Rubberneckers that would be great for that age-- and for parents, too!

Wellllll, *THIS* summer the airfares are so cheap into Mexico that I plan to take the family to Cancun. ($200 RT out of either Houston (IAH) or Dallas (DFW)). Been a long time since the deals were THAT attractive...and it sure beats 8 hours in a car!

Have fun!

Take your laptop computer with several DVD's. That will keep them busy for hours in the car.
