Vacation Spots close by
 

I am looking for some suggestions for a great vacation get-away within 6-10 hrs drive time from Madison, WI.

It would be for 2 people looking for quiet, no kids, no theme parks, no high traveled tourist spots. We like hiking, camping, fishing, photography etc.

We have been to the U.P. several times and love it, but are looking for a new area to explore.

If anyones has a suggestion I would appreciate it.

How about the Apostle Islands?

I may look into that...have you been there?

Do you need a boat (I don't have one)

Can you take your car? Or do you have to backpack camp (we don't have that equipment either)

It sounds peaceful, but just not sure how to go about getting there and getting around w/o a boat of our own. Any suggestions or experience would be helpful in my research.

Can you rent backpack equipment and are there regular boat trips to and from the islands? We would be going the first 2 weeks of Sept.

sorry for all the questions, but now you've got me interested in going to the islands.

Also, most of the state parks along Minnesota's North Shore (northeast of Duluth) would be within 10 hours. You can look at them here:

For a point of reference, Jay Cooke is just a bit SW of Duluth. Parks along the North Shore start with Gooseberry and go northeast from there.

If you're planning on starting over Labor Day weekend you'll have to figure out your plans and make reservations ASAP. Weekends in any of these areas are going to be pretty busy.

Voyaguers and Isle Royale National Parks are worth some time. Maybe a one or two day trip to Isle Royale and a boat ride in Voyaguers.

Soudan Underground Mine, Route 61 in Minn. are also interesting.
