vacation long beach to La Jolla

I need to rent a car to drive from Long Beach to La Jolla. Know of rental places that are inexpensive but reliable?
Where should I stay in La Jolla for an active couple and is reasonably priced.

Stay in the Gas Lamp district if you are into the nightlife/bar scene. I always rent from National. Not too expensive, but very good service, and I am on the road for work 75% of the year.

Isn't the gas lamp district in downtown San Diego? Does La Jolla have one too?

I used Priceline to rent a compact car from Long Beach. I got it for $14/day. You should try it!

Is this a one way trip? costs are generally much higher than if you return it to the same location.

The Gas Lamp district is in downtown. Nice area and fun, but not La Jolla and a different feel if you're looking for more of a beach town with art galleries and fine dining. Gas Lamp District is more party like.

We will be returning to Longbeach to fly out of there. We can use some places to stay in La Jolla and some fun things to do. Any ideas?

There is an Embassy Suites I believe on Fay Ave in La Jolla, close to walk to all the shop and resturants.

It's the Best Western Inn by the sea which is on Fay between Silverado and Prospect. One of the lower priced hotels in the La Jolla Village along with the Village Inn (formerly travelodge which is motor inn style where you park outside your door. Mid range would be Empress Hotel, Grand Colonial or Scripps Inn (Nicer Motor style Inn but across the street from the Ocean - check their website). Higher end would be La Valencia or Hotel Parisi. Depending on your budget all are within the Village area (what we La Jolla folk call Dowtown La Jolla). Lots of fun things to do. Snorkeling - wear a wetsuit, ocean kayaking, biking, hiking the Torrey Pines State Park which are cliffs overlooking the ocean, just walking around the La Jolla Cove area is a nice thing to do. La Jolla is way nicer, quieter and more relaxing than the Gaslamp area.
