Vacation in New Mexico
 

I plan to spend a week in New Mexico this summer, staying in Santa Fe and Taos. What sights are worth seeing, and what are some nice reasonably priced places to stay?

what are your interests, and what do you imagine yourself seeing in sante fe and taos that would make you decide to spend a week there?

no offense intended.... just encouraging that you give helpful posters a little focus...

I haven't been there since the mid '80's, but am planning a trip in late September this year. Right now, at the top of my list are:

1. Bandelier and/or Puye cliff dwellings (are they the same place?).
2. Taos Pueblo, which is probably a major tourist rip-off by now, but I wanna go anyway.
3. Hot air balloon ride.
4. Native American crafts and art.
5. Santa Fe's annual Wine & Chili Fiesta.

That might be enough to fill our four days, but I'm still researching. After much internet research, we've decided to stay at El Farolito: http://www.farolito.com/.

Beachbum has given you some good suggestions. In addition, the Santa Fe Opera will be performing; it's a beautiful venue and fun even if you're not a big opera fan. Dh and I went for the first time last summer and enjoyed it.

There are tons of art galleries around downtown and along Canyon Road.

Santa Fe has some very nice museums; the Palace of the Governors and the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum are downtown, and there is a folk art museum and some others nearby.

Taos Pueblo is a pretty traditional community and worth a visit. You could go rafting while you're in Taos as well.

If you get a chance, Chaco Cultural National Historical Park is amazing! It is in a remote area and you have to drive on dirt roads. Please check to see what road conditions are before you head out.

Utahtea

The Millicent Rogers Museum in Taos is an outstanding collection of Southwestern art and culture. Rogers was a wealthy heiress who collected American Indian arts and crafts. She was able to buy some of the more noteworthy pieces of pottery and jewelry before anyone saw value in them. Some really incredible items and a pleasant tranquil space to view them. A definite must-see.

Goo see the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge while in Taos also. Sort of a mini Grand Canyon and pretty darn impressive.
