Va to Maine in July
 

I am planning on traveling to Maine from VA in July of 2018. It will be myself and three outdoorsy teenage boys. The agenda for our trip is light to mod hiking, kayaking , fishing and eating lobster. We would like to stay along the coast but we're not really beach sitters. Acadia is def on the agenda but other than that I am def open to suggestions. We are thinking abt hitting Canada for a day or overnight. Would love some great ideas, it's been a bit overwhelming trying to plan this.

With 3 outdoorsy boys, I'd spend most or all of your time in Acadia/Bar Harbor. Everything you mentioned, and biking on carriage roads (no cars!) They will love it.

You don't say how long your trip is, but can't imagine anything in Canada being a day-trip, with the possible exception of Campobello Island

I've done that as a daytrip from Acadia. You would need passports.

Are you familiar with the lakes of interior Maine and their "camps"?

Stay in a cabin, eat at the lodge, fish with a guide, canoe and kayak to your hearts' content. Usually includes meals.

Some of them you come into by floatplane, some by boat or canoe, some you can drive.

For many New Englanders, this is an alternative to the coast.

Don't be surprised if you are the only ones in a given area even if it's July. There are several good lobster places. We have stayed in nearby Bath but I didn't care for the cottage DH rented. Brunswick is a college town with a variety of restaurants and a great farmers market on Fridays. Last year we rented a cottage via VRBO in the Damariscotta area. The Maritime Museum in Bath has some good boat trips to view lighthouses.

Our most favorite lobster shack is McLoon's (Waterman's has closed, family retired) which is somewhat near Owl's Head Transportation Museum and Owl's Head Light. The museum has events on weekends that might interest your family. One time we saw antique airplanes flying.

And don't miss Mt Battie in Camden on your way north. That's my favorite view. We carry bag chairs in the car so we can sit and enjoy the scenery. sometimes we have picnic lunches. This is a great place for a picnic lunch. Camden is very busy in the summer but it's usually not crowded at the top. (we take the auto road but you could hike)

Portland ME has two wonderful parks at either end of the city. Fort Williams in South Portland is where Bite Into ME food truck parks. They specialize in lobster rolls. Get some lunch and then pick a spot to enjoy the view looking out on busy Casco Bay. The park in the north, Eastern Promenade, also has a nice view and lots of picnickers. There's water access.
