Cedar Breaks just got 2 feet of snow yesterday. Cedar Breaks is a ways away from Bryce, but at about the same alititude.

They don't close the hiking trails when there is snow, it's just more difficult to hike (great snowshoeing in the winter, though). It could easily snow in April in Bryce, and while it might limit your activities it will be gorgeous.

Do you think we are crazy trying to make a base near Glendale, UT and taking day trips to Bryce & Capitol?

zacky Mar 22nd, 2006 04:51 PM

I think it is best to stay close to or in the park you plan to visit. It is tiring to drive, sightsee, HIKE...the last thing you want to do is drive a long way to and from a park to begin/end your day. Staying close is best IMO. We do long hikes (6-8 hours) so we just like to stay close, eat, grab a beer and crash. Enjoy!

Zacky - Recommendations on places to stay @ Bryce & Capitol? You did recommend Desert Pearl in Zion earlier.

Glendale to Bryce is 54 miles and 1 1/4 hour drive.

That's not so bad but taking scenic Hwy 12 to Capitol Reef and returning on Hwy 89 (it will be faster) your looking at 310 miles and over 8 hours of driving. I'd stay in Torrey one night and close to Bryce the other.

Yes, from what I hear, snow is a possibility at Bryce because of the higher elevation. And as mentioned might affect the trails. In March we couldn't get there due to weather and went on from Zion to Arches (see "Back from Arizona: trip report)." But I'd seen it as a youth.

In Springdale there are quite a few motels and also some B&Bs. Wonder
which one Dayle is staying at...we had brekfast brought to our doorstep at Red Rock Inn B&B. We were impressed by S. Utah's scenic terrain and only saw a little of it.
