You are far more likely to die in The Narrows than Angels Landing. If your kid is the careless type, doesn't listen to instructions then no don't take him/her. There are plenty of kids that do it every day. To my knowledge, no child with adult supervision has fallen from AL. Just like all the accidents at Yosemite. Most are adults or teens doing things that are just down right stupid. I'm not going to say AL didn't get my attention and it certainly go my daughters. It is a hike that isn't for everyone, I will admit that. Google all the accidents at the GC, Yosemite, or Zion. More people have died in The Narrows and even more in cars than at Angels Landing.

There was a 14 year old Boy Scout who fell from the trail. He fell after walking out on a ledge to carve his initials, on a dare. A man (49 year old, I think) fell when the rock crumbled while he was to close to the edge(2010). Another woman died in 2010 due to a heart attack. The death that occured in Oct 2012 was on a climbing route(not the regular trail).

That's a good point spiro and most people think just the opposite - that little kids are going to fall off the edge of the Grand Canyon or Angels Landing or wherever when in fact, it's more likely teenagers or adults being stupid or showing off.

And yet we never see people advising the adults to skip certain hikes or make sure you're holding tight to your hiking partners hand so they don't slip and fall....

I wonder how come nobody ever mentions to watch out for Mice in Yosemite? That is more scary to me.

Having worked in a National Park, yes rangers do advise that many adults skip certain hikes--usually because they are not in shape to do them, or they don't have the right gear, etc etc. The bottom line is that kids are unpredictable. Has nothing to do with being poorly behaved, just has to do with being able to pay attention and coordination. Some kids have it, some kids don't. Each parent knows their kids and each kid is different-not better or worse, just different.

Last year, an adult had a really bad slip/fall on Angels Landing and barely got snagged up by her hiking partner before she slipped off the chains and fell to her death. That type of incident doesn't get reported in statistics. Yes, 18-14 year old males are the highest risk category for accidents while hiking--certainly in the Grand Canyon!

But each parent needs to make a decision. My decision is that my kids can do Angels Landing when they are older--like lots older. I'm not sure *I* want to do Angels Landing and I am used to some pretty intense exposure while backpacking slick rock.

I've driven a school bus for 20 years and my wife has taught for 25. Kids are VERY predictable.

This same question has been posed on here many times. It is up the parents as to which hike to hike, whether to play sports, whether to let them walk alone to school,etc. For my wife and myself, we were fairly strict and overprotective. For some reason hiking has never seemed that dangerous to us. I will say my wife did not want to do AL.

I just finished up 6 days at Zion and 2 at Bryce & could have stayed longer in both places.

Angels Landing is definitely not for everyone - I didn't make it all the way myself...

I do recommend you make the hike up to Scout's Lookout, and give the first 100 yard section of the route to Angels Landing a try. There are chains on the first section but it's much tamer than the last 1/2 mile. If you make that 1st 100 yards there's a big, wide landing where you can hang out, and you get a great view of the last part. Only you can decide - don't let anybody make that decision for you.

I also recommend you do at least part of the narrows trail. There are several outfitters in town from whom you can rent gear. There is one right outside the pedestrian entrance to the park, and several more in town.

In September all you will need is water hiking shoes and a sturdy pole - both well worth the rental cost.

The full narrows hike is a strenuous 5mi trek one way, but you don't need to do that to enjoy the wonder.

I hiked to Scouts Lookout with my daughter. She wanted to continue.

I told her that if I thought she'd want to continue we wouldn't have gone this far. I also told her I wouldn't mind if she went on if she didn't have parents, a husband and a daughter.

She sulked for a minute and that's the last I heard of it.

No, The Full Narrows hike is 16 miles not 5

A lot of people hike all the way to Orderville Canyon(and go up it for a little ways--this what I remember as the most narrow area) This is about 4.5-5 miles(one way)

To hike all(full Narrows Hike) of The Narrows requires a shuttle to get to the other side of the park. You must have a permit for this hike(difficult to get). You must carry out everything.

Sorry, spiro is correct, 16mi for a full tops down Narrows hike. From the bottom up it's 5mi one way for day hikers without a permit.

That is a great video. That person sitting on their behind at 1:59 would be me. And why are there spots with no chain?
