Utah - Arches NP
 

Following my recent trip that included Bryce, Zion, GC and Sedona, I'm tinkering with the idea of another Utah visit.

I'd like to plan a mini trip that could possibly be put on the beginning of another trip.

I'd like to do/see "easy" hikes, scenery at Arches and maybe a day at Canyonlands Island in the Sky.

How much time would be sufficient for such a pit stop?

I would fly into and out of SLC.

To add on to the other discussion, it's a 4.5 to 5 hours drive from the airport to Moab - going down I-15 and over Hwy 6 through Price and on down to I-70, then past Green River & south to Moab.

If you really wanted to spend the money, there is a company that flies between SLC and Moab, Salmon Air, propeller planes.

Have you thought about flying into Denver and working this into a trip to Durango and Uray (sp)? That's a fly-drive vacation on my list.

I check Mapquest, Yahoo Maps and Google Maps. Yahoo has it at 3:40 and the other two have it as 4:00.

The distance is 240 miles.

I drove from las Vegas to Bryce and the driving time was somewhat longer.

Is it really a longer drive than that?

Yahoo lies. Google is off a bit as you have discovered.

Between I-15 and I-70, the road is single lane most of the way. If you get stuck behind a slow RV or other vehicle, it could take a while before it's safe to pass. Hwy 6 is a bit windy and requires caution to drive, it's the most dangerous highway in UT.

I do this drive often and it always takes me 4.5 hours. 2 pit stops allowed.

As Dayle has mentioned, it takes longer to drive from SLC to Moab. Another thing you have to worry about is traffic in SLC! You have to drive all the way thought Salt Lake City, so depending on day and time you arrive...there could be commute traffic..or just regular traffic. Also as Dayle has mentioned, Hwy 6 can be a slow, drive.

Any chance of landing in Grand Junction, CO? Moab is 112 miles and less than 2 hour drive.

Salmonair no longer flies SLC - Moab but I think USAirways does.

I think it's about 150. return.

Talk about competition. I think Thrifty might be the only auto rental out of Moab.

50-60 per day!!

Rent a Jeep Wrangler at Farabee's in Moab :)

Take the Potash Road, then Shafer Trail into Canyonlands and Long Trail back to Potash Road.

Interesting about Salmonair, I guess USAir bought them out. They used to fly to a few stops in Idaho too.

If there is a Thrifty rental car in Moab, things have changed! A few years ago a guy totaled my car (with me in it) the first day I was down there. I discovered there were no rental agencies in town and a friend had to drive down from SLC to retrieve me!

Salmonair still exists. But they don't fly Moab.

I called them. They told me that USAirways now flies there. They're in Idaho.
