Using travellers cheques in Las Vegas
We will be arriving in Vegas shortly and have spoken to friends who recently visited there. The Australian Dollar was around .72cents but showed at only 66c in Vegas. Does anyone have info on this and would it be best to use travellers cheques . We have always used cash or visa but in this case t.c. may be the cheapest way. Is there a cost to cash them in and any idea of how much. Thanks,.

I have always found I get the best exchange rates when I travel if I use my ATM, debit and credit cards. But you might want to check with your bank to see if they have additional charges for out of network transactions.

US dollar checks are accepted quite easily in Vegas, and at no charge. Just make sure to have ID with you.
American businesses almost never accept foreign currency TC. |
I have had the same experiece as the writer who advised you to use ATM or credit cards. This is the way to get the best exchange rate no matter where you travel.

Also remember, no matter what form of exchange you use to get currency: It's Las Vegas! They've devised every possible way to make it convenient to extract money from you!

I should add that in Las Vegas I have had difficulty finding an ATM for my bank--Bank of America. The closest one to the Strip is a two-mile drive. However, there must be loads of other cash machines around. After all, the place runs on the money it scams from tourists. Advice: enjoy the architecture, shows, restaurants, nearby Red Rock Canyon, and but a strict limit on how much to gamble.

Definitely use ATM machines. US$ traveler checks are OK - but you will lose big time on the wxchange rate when you buy them in Oz.
But don't use ATMs inside casinos - they are generally not regular bank machines and they charge much higher transaction fees. Just go to any ATM in a shopping mall, at any bank or credit union, in the airport, etc. |
That should be "exchange rate . . ."
darn typos! |
