USAIR Safety?
I realize there are other sources for this topic, but I'd like to hear from any fodorites- would you be "hesitant" about flying USAIR due to safety issues. I have a voucher and am thinking about using it the last week in Jan.(if they are still solvent)

You'll get better responses if you post this in the "airlines" forum.

I would not hesitate using them.
I believe their fleet is fairly new - and they still are a member of Star Alliance, so I presume maintenance will be kept up. Apart from that to my knowledge they don't have a negative safety report at all - ironically just as other airlines that went bancrupt like e.g. Pan Am that finally folded after that vicious bomb attac that could have hit any other carrier, too. The essence is that maintenance is usually not saved on when airlines are in financial trouble, I guess. Enjoy that coupon! |
it should have read safety record , not report. Sorry.

Thanks Bardo, I'll try there, and thanks hsv- I've flown them a lot in the past and hope they can come out of this.

I have a family friend who is a pilot for Continental. A few of us were discussing the safety issue back when they were having financial problems in the early 1990's. I'll paraphrase the gist of what he said to my Dad "The nose of the plan hits first and I'm the first person to go. If any pilot for this airline felt they were comprising safety there wouldn't be one of us who get on a plane."
USAir has numerous financial issues and some serious hurdles to overcome. But, I can't imagine any pilot would get in the cockpit if they felt safety was being comprised. |
I wouldn't worry about safety as much as the management/labor problems they have been having lately. There were 300 cancelled flights over Christmas this year and 4 planes worth of luggage had to be flown into Charlotte because of employees calling off sick.
|
Agree Stephanie re labor problems- maybe I'll just take a carry on, at least I won't have to worry about lost luggage. Thanks Ryan, in that sense I guess my safety concern is a little silly in that if safety was an issue the pilots would be the first to "balk". Maybe it just gives me a confidence boost to hear from others!
