USA - Travel Guide Books
We hope to get to USA in Dec'06-Jan'07 for family holiday. Intend to spend 1 week skiing around Denver,1-2 week in and around NYC and 1-2 weeks yet to be decided. Can anyone recommend a good travel guide book on USA in general and specific areas.

There are always the Fodor's Guides. Check link in upper right corner of this page. "Buy Fodor's Guides.

Fodors, Lonely Planet, Moon Handbooks. Those are the three I like best.

My favorite is Frommer's.

Thanks for the suggestions. I note that the most recent edition of Fodors USA was published in January 2003. Is it getting out of date by now?

I also like books listed above, and especially like Fodors. But I find it somewhat redundant to info available on this website (not in "talk", but other sections).
Therefore, I buy a different book (sorry Fodors) and print out relevant info from this site to take with me. If I want to buy a book to read, it is Fodors, though. |
It really depends on your particular interests-certain guidebooks appeal to different people. I love the Moon Guides, because they have suggestions for all budget ranges and they generally have a lot of details about outdoor activities. I have their Colorado guide and like it quite a bit (the Rough Guide is pretty good for Colorado/Rocky Mountain States, too). You should really spend some time at a bookstore with a good selection figuring out which guide is right for you.

I should add, for NYC, I loved the "N.F.T: Not For Tourists" guide. Really great suggestions for shops, restaurants, sights, parks, etc.
