USA Fall Foliage

Lake Champlain, Vermont is listed #1. My favorite is the Smoky Mountains.

No northern Michigan?!? They are smoking something funny.

By the way, awesome foliage website. They have maps with reports from the last nine years. Very cool:

The view from Holy Hill near Hartford, Wisconsin is breathtaking. I go there every fall just to see the beautiful colors. You go way up high in the basilica and you can look forever. One day we saw the fall colors and could see the tall buildings in Milwaukee 25 miles away.

The Berkshires in Mass have awesome foliage as well.

Northern Wisconsin (anywhere north of Hwy 64) - the last full week of September.

Outstanding!!!

Kassandra, #4 on the list, the Mohawk Trail, encompasses the Berkshires.

Another vote for northern Wisconsin and/or Upper Michigan.

Really like driving on the MassPike in Massachusetts because you drive through different stages of foliage on a 2-3 hour ride pending where you begin. It's hard to pick one place when it is all around you.

Where would be place in northern Michigan and a good place to stay?

The Petoskey/Harbor Springs area of Michigan is beautiful. There is a tunnel of trees drive along Lake Michigan:

Traverse City is another great area with a peninsula that juts out into Traverse Bay (Old Mission Peninsula) that is filled with world-class wineries. It feels like a drive along the coast of California. And of course you can get out and taste them all!

Northern Michigan is breathtaking in the fall. It is so laid back and pretty. I always feel that it is very European in feel.

We are doing a week in Traverse City in a few weeks for my husband's conference. We have a few days before the conference starts so we are renting a little cottage on a lake through VRBO. I actually have several to choose from for around $100 a night. I can't wait! I hope it doesn't rain...

We've had rain and plenty of it in the high country of Arizona, Utah, and Colorado this summer. The aspens around Telluride should be spectacular.

Other places to stay in the Petoskey area (which I am more familiar with):

A great newer hotel. By request, they build a fire by the water at night and put out a complimentary s'more making basket.

And the Stafford people own several hotels and restaurants. All great:

And of course there is Mackinac Island. Not terribly great for foliage, but a wonderful place to be in the fall when it is not so hot and crowded:

Oh and two places on the Old Mission Peninsula. The first books up completely a year in advance, but you might get lucky with a cancelation:

Early reports aren't encouraging for the fall colors in Michigan this year. SOme folks are blaming it on the drought.
