Stephen: Although the months of June, July, and August are considered summer vacation time for most children 17 and under, I'm afraid that there is little
standardization across the US. In other words, Stephen, you can count on almost every child having off the monthe of July but private, public and speciality
schools vary greatly for the remainder of what used to be called "summer vacation." Colleges vary even more. In Northern Illinois, for example, you may have 3 kids in different age brackets who actually get off for summer at during three separate weeks. Most schools are starting back here the week
BEFORE labor day (which is the 1st Monday in September.) Some colleges start quite a bit before that. Spring breaks are also anywhere from late February to early April depending on the school. Standardization across the board (as in some European countries) does not hold here. I'd say you can count on a lot of children being on vacation during the last week of June, the whole month of July and the first half of August. But some will not be back in school until September.

It's very true that school districts across the U.S. have different vacations schedules- since you are asking about summer 2001- I would say the majority of kids will begin vacation June 15th through August 27th. Some schools may get out a few days later and some may go back a few days earlier but in general that is when they will be on vacation. College students on the other hand get out in late April or early May and go back in early to mid August (generally). Easter week is also a tricky spot with most schools off the week after Easter off and some schools off the week before Easter.Good luck!
