I'd want a car for drives out of Santa Fe. The countryside is too beautiful and too many interesting places to go to not have a car. And good places to eat are spread around. But, you wouldn't suffer either if you decided to stay in the center without wheels. But check before deciding to make sure which, with car or without, will allow you to see exactly what you'd like to see.

You really don't have much time and driving from one site to the other day after day is not a vacation.

Suggest:
Sante Fe. Excellent art/crafts. Probably, 3rd best in U.S.
Georgia O'Keeffe Museum.

The most famous Mountain Man/Exploree in US history is Kit Carson
The Museum. He is also buried there.

Albuquerque is about an hour south of Santa Fe. You can rent a car easily at the airport.

The train others mentioned is a commuter train with a somewhat limited schedule. http://www.nmrailrunner.com/

"Then a spiritual escape to Sedona, Az"

Too far from Santa Fe, over 400 miles. Stay in NM, loads to see right around Santa Fe. Taos is only 70 miles if you feel like a drive.

Sorry, typo.
" Railrunner (you'd have to time your flight right to use it since it is primarily for commuters so hours of operation is 24/7)"

S/b is NOT 24/7. It works well IF your arrival and departure times coincide with schedule. Far more trains M-F than weekends but still clustered around a.m. and p.m. commute times. Also, it involves riding a shuttle bus from airport to train stop.
