US City Cuisine

Hello guys, Would you happen to know what dishes can be attributed to New York and Chicago city cuisines? Thanks.

Hot dogs, yes, but cooked differently in each city.

Same thing for pizza.

For New York:
Bagels and lox (not wonder donuts)
Real pastrami
Great deli (hint for much of the country - anyplaes that says New York Deli isn't - and they have to serve fries - never chips - and real kosher pickles)
Egg cream
Black/white cookies
Seltzer - deliverd in quantity to your apartment (even a 5th floor walk-up)

High quality authentic food of almost every ethnicity (but we probably don;t have great Tex/Mex - but do real Mexican).

I have even seen places that are now serving "sweet tea" (ick!) - but that is definitely NOT local

I wonder if you blindfolded someone and gave them sweet tea and water with the same amount of sugar, if they'd be able to tell the difference.

It's not the tea that's the problem it's the 5 pounds of sugar per glass. IMHO iced tea needs lemon - not sugar - to be refreshing.

NY cheesecake
Eli's bread-whole wheat with nuts and raisins
New pickles-have not seen them elsewhere
Thin crust pizza-originally done at Lombardi's
Baked knishes including kasha and cabbage

The following were supposedly from NY:
Waldorf salad
Red Velvert cake-yes supposedly it is from NY not the south
Oysters Rockefeller
Manhattan Clam Chowder
NY strip steak
Baked pretzels
Eggs benedict
Italian style ices
Lobster Newburgh
Some people even claim the doughnut is a NY invention
Ice Cream cone
General Tso's chicken

Sounds like some of the Yankees don't know how to make sweet tea properly (Oh, wait, I'm a Yankee & a damn Yankee @ that). Sweet tea may well be the greatest invention of the South (if it is made properly).

Thank you for the suggestions. I have created a New York cuisine page on Mycitycuisine.org. You can see what I have done at:

http://www.mycitycuisine.org/wiki/New_York

This is just a start. When I have more time, I will google up the information on the dishes and write a description for each of them. By the way, does anyone have photos for these dishes?

Chicago

Italian beef sandwich (hot and wet) - a Chicago tradition
Thick crust pizza (thin is also very good in some pizzerias)
Steaks - some of the best steakhouses in the country
Chicago hot dogs
Italian ices
Ethnic foods - Mexican, Polish, German, African, etc. All located in their little enclaves all over the city
