US 66

We're planning a road trip and hope to explore old US 66 --- where we can locate it--beginning in St. Louis and heading west. Any suggestions or comments are welcome.

Hi MaryAnn I saw your post on the Europe forum.
We drove 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica in March 2002. Are you intending on driving the whole route or just part of it?
I recommend you buy a detailed guide to give you the route - much of it is no longer marked. Illinois does a brilliant job of signposting it, but most other states don't bother. If you let me know which bits you are doing I can maybe come up with some ideas.

You'll particularly have trouble finding the markers in St. Petersburg and Berlin...lol

Have fun

Ok I see you are starting in St Louis. You can read the report my DH made on it at http://tinyurl.com/2qdw72- click on route 66. It is not as detailed as it could be but will give you an idea. He has put in some rather strange links too, forgive him, it was his first attempt at writing up a trip.
I would spend longer over it if I got the chance to go again, which I really hope I will get. I'd go a month later than we did too. The cold in NM was incredible, but that was when he could go so we went. We missed a lot on the way, as we were relying only on a Dutch book for guidance. I couldn't at the time get a better one, but a good guide is essential.
I really can recommend Las Vegas NM. It is a bit off the route but is a nice town, and cheaper to stay in than Santa Fe.
