I second the motion on the Mohonk Montain House suggestion. Great hiking and beautiful views, all within an 1 hr. & 1/2 of NYC. Try getting a room at the Mohonk House, but if booked or too expensive, try hotels and B&Bs in the nearby tow of New Paultz (which is a fun place too).

I hiked on the Mohonk grounds with my parents when I was a kid. Mohonk is a very special place but it is quite expensive to stay there. I forgot how long to the trip from NYC to Mohonk is but isn't more like 3 hrs.?

You should be able to find many nice places to stay which are not more than two hours from the city. Here is the url for the NY State Tourism website:

One place I know of and have considered going to is the Peekskill Inn which looks like it has beautiful Hudson views, is only around 50 miles from the city and is reasonably-priced (should be under a $100- a night, with an "internet" (mention this to them) or AAA discount).
