upscale restaurant on Anchorage
 

We are leaving Saturday and will arrive in Anchorage first. We would love to try an upscale restaurant with a good wine list. Any suggestions?

Best wine list is at the Corsair, across from the Hotel Captain Cook.

If the sky is clear, the Crow's Next on the top floor of the Cook has great views and decent food.

There's also Seven Glaciers, on top of the mountain at Alyeska Resort about 50 minutes south of town.

Marx Brothers is also a local favorite with a very nice (online) wine list.

We liked the Crow's Nest at the Captain Cook because of the great views. Same with the restaurant at the top of the mountain in Girdwood (Seven Glaciers at Alyeska). And the food was certainly very enjoyable.

But for really good food, go to the Marx Brothers--it was absolutely wonderful! (no view though).

Last week we ate at Simon & Seaforts in Anchorage. They too have an extensive wine list. Several seats have a beautiful view of the bay.
They serve an award winning macadamia nut and crab stuffed halibut that was fabulous.

I would have to say the Crows Nest at the Captain Cook is the best Anchorage has to offer, its the only AAA 4 diamond in the city and has a 12,000 bottle selection

To clarify:

For wine list, Corsair's wine list is much better than Crow's Nest.

For in-town glitz: Crow's Nest has it all. Creative dishes, too, but inconsistent service.

For best food, Marx Bros. has the most consistent kitchen in town.

For natural beauty and high-end food, it's Seven Glaciers.

AAA is great for jump starts but I've never really trusted their dining ratings.

As for the battle of the wine cellars, Crow's Nest and Corsair each claim 10K and MB says it has 11K.

The downside of Marx Bros. is that its in a historic house for Anchorage ... which is just an older house most place and lacks the "blow your socks off" factor of the Crow's Nest's view and penthouse elegance.

Thanks so much. Do you think we can make it back to Anchorage for dinner if we are taking the 26 Glacier Cruise at 1:00? It ends around 5:30 and I don't know if we'll be able to make the 6:00 tunnel or how long it takes to drive from Whittier to Anchorage. Help!

Should be no problem if you want to eat a little later dinner in Anchorage.

If you want to go to Girdwood for 7 Glaciers, you're right there shortly after you leave the tunnel.

BTW, it's not stuffy or upscale in setting, but a personal favorite is the Double Musky. Can't speak to the wine list these days, but the food is excellent. Downside is no reservations. Lines can be long -- for good reason. French pepper steak and blackened sockeye (you have to ask) are fabulous. It's noisy and crowdy in an old log cabin.

I would add my personal favorite - Turnagain House in Indian, between Girdwood and Anchorage.

They do the best job with fresh fish - wine list is so-so.

Marx Bros is unique - chef does interesting things with unusual fare. Plus Van comes to your table to make his famous Caesar Salad that is out of this world.
