Upscale hotels in Charleston

I've been to Charleston several times and have stayed at the Marriotts and Hiltons of the world. I'm going to go this weekend and would like to stay in a truly upscale hotel. I've been looking at the Charleston Place...are there others that are comparable or close to comparable? We want to be in the heart of downtown's historic area.

Charleston Place is an excellent choice. For some additional options take a look at Go Travel's comprehensive review.

Nicer hotels:

Market Pavillion
Wentworth Mansion

Just as nice:

Planters Inn
Harborview Inn

Miniscule step down:

French Quarter Inn
Church Street Inn

I think Charleston Place is the best ... :-)

Thank you for the information everyone. An added wrinkle is that we want to take along our tiny dog. I know Charleston Place accepts pets and I'll contact the others to see if they do. Thanks again!

I'm partial to the Planters Inn, personnally.

If you are not stuck on the hotel idea, there are a number of wonderful B & B's on the Battery (as well as elsewhere).
