St. Regis, perhaps the best. The Peninsula?

The New York Palace Hotel is truly wonderful. Right across the street from St. Patrick's cathedral.

Wow, it's been a few years since I stayed at the New York Palace, and I requested and got a northwest corner room which was very spacious. But there was nothing very special about the hotel then. It seemed just like any average Marriott or similar chain to me. Maybe it's undergone a really major and total renovation. But it does house Le Cirque 2000!

The Four Seasons, unless 57th St is too far uptown?

Pierre, Plaza, Regency, Ritz Carlton, St Regis, Waldorf are also all 50s-60s eastside.

You might look into The Benjamin, they guarantee a great night sleep. They even have a sleep consierge, and if you like the bed you can buy it.<BR><BR>The Palace has had a few transformations in the last few years. There was a major fire in the hotel and most of the rooms have been completely rennovated and all of the systems, including the phone and internet access and office equipment were installed in each room.<BR><BR>There is a lovely cafe and restaurant on the first floor. It's is now one of the nicer hotels in the city.

Plaza Athenee, Carlyle, St. Regis, Pierre, or the Ritz-Carlton Central Park South.

you will not go wrong at the Plaza Athenee. 61st street i think on the east side. wonderful service great rooms, very secure (only one entrance -- that's why lots of vips stay there) and not as outrageously priced as other hotels in the area.

Bentley Hotel,small boutique hotel, at 61st and York, a block from the East River. We booked the Bentley through Hotels.com and paid $99/night which is a deal for Manhattan!

For elegance, class, boutique atmosphere, and east side location, go for the Lowell

I had a nice lobster salad room service dinner with a friend who was staying at the Palace about ten days ago. We had an exceptionally early curtain time of 6:00pm to meet, so even the usual pre-theater dinner places wouldn't have worked. The Palace was lovely. Every detail attended to quickly, even to providing a CD player with good sound for the room upon request. Room service and amenities were first rate. And, the room was spacious &amp; did not have that &quot;used and abused&quot; look so many hotels have a few years after a renovation. My understanding is they don't wait to do over all of their rooms at once; they have a refurbish schedule and pretty much avoid the tattered look. The Towers section is, of course, even more luxurious. I was impressed with what I saw of their security. Everyone walking in was discreetly watched. I saw hotel personnel politely approach anyone who looked lost or out of place when entering the lobby. When I used the house phone, I was first asked the room number and then the name of the guest I was visiting. Yes, these are all things that should occur in a good hotel, but I think we all know it doesn't always happen. They are located right behind St. Patrick's Cathedral, which is nextdoor to Sak's and across the street from Rockefeller Center. Nice location. Best hotel in NY? I wouldn't go that far. But, it certainly is up there with the quality hotels. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there on my next trip.

Plaza Athenee is the BEST.. on 64th St.,between Park &amp; Madison. A little more up- than midtown, but worth it.
