Upper Peninsula (MI) highlight

I'll be traveling east from Door County WI to Petoskey MI in late August and would like to spend one night along the way. Can anyone recommend a destination and/or place to stay? We'll see Mackinac Island once we get to Petoskey so would like something that's more along the way. Thanks.

chicago999,

Your best bet would be Manistique. It is right along Lake Michigan on US 2. It has a Comfort Inn and Holiday Inn Express as well as a number of local motels. From Manistique would could explore Fayatte SP or Kitch-iti-kipi springs. Check out www.UPtravel.com.

Thanks SuzieTrue. Manistique looks nice but I wondered if it is worth the extra driving time to go up to Au Train and see the Picture Rocks lakeshore, instead? Seems like that might be a nicer destination plus I've read good things about a B and B called Pine Wood Lodge-- more charming than a Comfort Inn However I realize it's several extra hours and I may be cutting my time short in both places. Any advice for me?

fyi it's just my husband and I, no kids

Pictured Rocks and AuTrain are nice. Definitely nicer than Manistique. A boat trip along the Pictured Rocks makes for some great views. I'm not sure how late the last trip of the day is. Do try to make it to Miner's Castle and if you are up for it, Miner's Falls.

Pictured Rocks is great, but how much time are you willing to give to adding it?

To really see the Lake Shore, you will need to take a cruise.

chicago999,
My husband and I spent the 2nd-to-last night of our honeymoon (a cross-country road trip from CA to MI) at the Pine Wood Lodge. It is definitely worth it and SO much better than a Comfort Inn! A very romantic spot with wonderful innkeepers. They recommended a great roadside restaurant nearby - something with the word "Roadhouse" in the name, if I recall.

We had less than one day to spend in the area but we wanted to get a taste of Pictured Rocks, so we drove out to Miner's Castle, walked along the beautiful beach just east of there, and hiked to Miner's Falls. We definitely want to go back and rent kayaks someday!

Door County is also fabulous. Between Door County, the Pictured Rocks lakeshore, and Petoskey area, you definitely feel like you're in the "northern California coast of the Midwest" (we're native Californians). Have a wonderful trip!
