Try to get lodging in Grand Canyon and if they say they are full, make a reservation that can be cancelled elsewhere and keep calling for cancellations in the park. That will allow you to walk to see the sunrise and sunsets without having to negotiate the dark roads when mule deer and elk are also on the move. It is nice to be in the park when the day trippers have left and you can have more room near the rim.

Do go down into the canyon at least a short way.

A few years ago, we did a 10 day trip to Arizona. A few nights were spent in Cottonwood. We stayed at the Tavern Hotel in downtown cottonwood. Very nice! Nice restaurants and bars nearby. Wine tasting not far. We visited Jerome but the highlight for us was the Copper Museum in Clarkdale. We spent several hours looking at all the copperware, shells, and implements.

we are definitely planning to some shortish hikes down, and we do have lodging in the park! I have been making reservations every six months as one trip after another got canceled. I have some reservations for oct 2021 that I will be canceling in May after the trip! So your advice is on target! Thanks

Really try to get to the copper museum in the next town, Clarkdale. When I said shells, I meant military projectile shells. Fascinating. Husband loved all of that stuff. I liked the cookware and decorative copper.
