Hey! Interesting question
To take cool photos, I would suggest:
LACMA street lamps
Venice canals
the Pink Wall on Melrose Ave.
Koreatown (one of the most significant spots in the city, with Latino and Korean cultures merging)

From my experience I think you are a little overthinking. Because I found Downtown during night to be pretty safe around Christmas. Not sure about what happens after midnight. But since you thinking about getting out before midnight I think it should be safe. And regarding the taxi/uber situation, I think you'll find plenty. So, enjoy yourself while you're out there.
