Union Square to A train lunch recommendations
 

Over the past two year, my husband and I have traveled to NYC on day trips for medical appointments at Union Square. I have found many great restaurant recommendations thanks to NYC Fodorites - Marta, Gotham Bar and Grill, Davey ice cream, Black Seed Bagel, Motorino pizza, and more.

Weather permitting, next week we hope to take the A train to the Cloisters. I'm interested in lunch recommendations between Union Square and the A train (will be walking, but not sure whether to catch it near Washington Sq Park or Eighth Ave). Often questions are too general, I hope this is not too specific. Need a sit down restaurants, most anything but Asian or Indian, which we have at home.

It's not quite on the way (2 long blocks out of the way), but we had a really delicious dinner at the Tap Room (it's one of Tom Colicchio's restaurants).

(I would take the L train at Union Square west to connect to the A train at 8th Avenue and 14th Street.)

I find your question too general since there are innumerable restaurants between Union Square and the stations you mention. How much do you want to spend on lunch?

La Boqueria for tapas

Stay away from everything on Park South, especially the coffee shop.

If you have the time and inclination Tocqueville

For some reason it rarely mentioned with other terrific restaurants.

I'm putting Tap Room, La Boqueria, and Tocqueville on my list for another time, all appeal to me.

I like ABC Kitchen, on East 19th Street off Broadway.

I assume you are going to Philips, be sure to ask your doctor about all the planned changes at Mt. Sinai/Beth Israel.

IMDonehere: Will do. Are the changes related to the hospital itself or also outpatient/MD office visits? We travel from upstate NY to see a specialist for a complicated case.

They are making many changes in many areas, so please ask. They are supposed to expand Philips but I do not know what that means. They are going to sell many of the properties of the constitute the main hospital and then change Eye and Ear to be a more general hospital.

You might want to have lunch near the Cloisters. We had a delicious lunch at th New Leaf. Here's our morning at the Cloisters and lunch at New Leaf. Try the Kelso Pilsner if you are a beer person.

maitaitom: I already have your Cloisters trip report and entire blog saved - love it! We might need lunch before traveling to the Cloisters, but beer and a snack afterwards might work.

I hope to be in LA this year and have your suggestions saved for there as well. This gives me an opportunity to thank you for your detailed and fun reporting. Especially glad that you are back to traveling after your health scare.
