If you go to the Underground and that area you'll get to witness at least 2-3 drug deals going down. Very educational.

I went to the Underground in April for the first time. It was disappointing; the only thing remotely worth doing was taking a break for cokes and a snack at Johnny Rocket's.

Yes, definitely skip Underground! It's not what it used to be :(! Stone Mountain is a great idea!

I have to agree with everyone else..skip Underground it was way cool 36 years ago but not know.

I was also wondering why the Cyclorama wasn't mentioned, glad someone did. Also Stone Mountain is great and so is Kennesaw Mountain.

My DH says that there is a King Tut exhibit at the High Museum and there is an exhibit of the Terra-cotta Warriors at the Civic Center. We haven't been yet, but plan on going between Christmas and New Years. I am not sure if it will still be there in April.

The Tut exhibit is at the Civic Center. There's been quite a bit of press coverage on how they brought an aging facility up to speed to house this world class exhibit.

I think it's an outgrowth of the Egyptian antiquities in the Carlos Museum at Emory. P_M's hero, Dr. Hawass, was supposed to give a talk at Emory on the 11th but "something happened" and the event was canceled.

This is a big deal and there's a lot of buzz around the exhibit. Tix are available on Ticketmaster (see above link)

Underground Atlanta is dead - for the second time. We were driving in the area this weekend and talking about how people think that area is "Atlanta" and how far off they are. There are great (walkable) areas of Atlanta (Midtown) but it's not the area around Underground Atlanta!

A visit to Atlanta these are the best picks.
1. The High Museum.
2. They Cyclorama at Grant Park. The employees there are no help. They simply have no understanding of History but the display including the Locomotive Texas is very good.
3.Stone Mountain. Not in Atlanta but just to the east of the city. Best time is when they have the laser light show. That from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
4. Kennesaw Mountain Park North of Atlanta off I75.
The best palace to eat in town is Mary Mac's Tea Room. I will warn you I haven't ate there in Years and Mrs. Luppo has sold it. So may not be as good as it once was.

We just spent 1 1/2 days in Atlanta on the way to a bowl game. Went to see "The Nutcracker" at the Fox theatre (theatre well worth visiting even if you don't see a show there). Also went to the Aquarium - loved it! We got there right when it opened and it didn't start getting crowded until a couple of hours later. After that, we walked over to the Coke store. DD seemed to really enjoy looking around the place, especially at the recycled items.
I never realized Altanta had so much to do and would love to go back and spend more time.

It really sounds like Underground Atlanta has changed a lot. cgenster - your statement that 36 years ago it was cool pretty much targets when I was last there :-P! Add in the fact that I was about 16 and you know how old I am ;-). Might have to check out the Cyclorama since we are both former history teachers. I hadn't even heard of it before - thanks!

There was an article on ajc.com (the local newspaper) about the demise of Underground Atlanta. Everyone agrees that it is no more dangerous than anywhere else, but yet no one goes there and so more stores close and then no one has a reason to go there.

Yep, Underground has "died" twice now. If Atlanta is truly a phoenix, it may come back again. The new idea is to bring a casino in.
