UK Passport query
 

I'm going to New York in a couple of weeks, and my passport is due to run out about a week after I come home to the United Kingdom. Is this allowed? Someone told me that you're not admitted to the US unless you still have three months to run on your passport.

Acording to the website for the US Embassy in London (www.usembassy.org.uk), "All British travellers to the U.S. must possess a full 10 year passport valid for their entire stay. A British visitor's passport is not valid."

It does not specifically state whether your passport needs to be valid for a period after your trip. As you know, this is a requirement of many countires, but as I am a US citizen, I can't speak with certainty about whether the US requires this.

You might want to call the Visa Section with your question:

Call your local US Embassy and ask them. Get their response on official letterhead and carry it with you.

We were with friends (coming from the US) going through immigration in Acapulco Mexico and the officials were not going to let my friend through with a passport that was due to expire.

Fortunately, he had the common sense to have the Mexican consulates office write on letterhead that his passport was valid for travel into Mexico.

Since the UK does participate in the VWP,your passport must be valid for a period of 6 months beyond your date of entry.....Hope this helps....S

As a UK citizen and frequent visitor to the US I can tell you that you're absolutely correct. You must have three full months on your passport as of the date of your return to the UK. You'll have to renew your passport urgently or Immigration won't let you in! Good luck with it and enjoy your holiday.
