UCLA Area in July

I have to attend a week long class at UCLA in July. My husband would like to take the whole family and do some sight seeing while I'm in class.

Can anyone reccomend reasonably priced hotels ($150 - $200) in the UCLA area. I have to be in class by 7:30 each morning and will be done by 5:00, so I think we need somewhere close due to traffic.

Thanks

When I first moved to LA, I was teaching at UCLA. I actually stayed at the old Holiday Inn Bel Air off of Sunset Blvd. It is now called the Angeleno:

It's a Joie de Vivre property, if that makes a difference at all.

This hotel is a five-minute (slightly twisty and curvy) drive down Sunset Blvd. to UCLA. If your class is in North Campus, it's ideal.

If your class is in South Campus (i.e., the Medical School), you might consider hotels off of Wilshire Blvd. in that area. There's a great W hotel on Hilgard in that general area (the old Westwood Marquis):

You rarely get deals at W Hotels, but you never know, do you? It might be nice. And it puts you closer to Westwood Village, which is a strolling neighborhood with eateries and movie houses and what-now.

Both good recommendations from rjw (Hi rjw).

HI--it is the oddest thing....I have been trying to answer your post and it will not accept my input!! So I started a new thread to answer you and that disappeared too...Curiouser and curiouser...Anyway, one last time--try looking into the UCLA Guest House run by the university--a nice place where we have stayed many times. Very inexpensive, includes free (very good) continental brkfst. Maybe the fact that I included the website is what kept kicking off my replies....Price is $110/room and no taxes charged b/c it is run by state of CA!!! So if you are interested, since I cannot seem to send you the site, just Google UCLA Guest House and all the info will come up.

Just as an experiment, I am going to try one last time to re-send my original response:

HI--I would suggest at least looking into the UCLA Guest House. It is a very pleasant place to stay. No snazzy amenities, like a pool or a bar, but free continental breakfast and free parking. The rates are about $110/night w/no taxes b/c of being a state run facility. You--and your family as well--would qualify to stay there as you are taking a course. Here is the site if you want to investigate.

Ok--now it is on like a million times!! :) :) Sorry...I cannot figure out what happened, but I have been trying to answer you since yesterday and just now, they all appeared.

Thanks for the great information. I tried the guest house and they are full for the week of our visit. I am not sure which side of the campus I will be on; so I will consult a map and then contact the hotels reccommended.

Thanks again.

We have a child who attends UCLA and stay in L.A. there often.
We usually stay at the W but that is not in your budget. Since the guest house is full, you ought to look into the Tiverton House. It's a large inn across the street from the school. We stayed there last year when our child had a tonsillectomy. They allow anybody to stay there - not just those involved with the medical center in some way. The prices are very good. The Hilgard House is across the street from the W and would be in your price range. Somebody suggested the old Holiday Inn. It is going through a refurbishing so I wouldn't suggest it until it's all done. More questions? Just ask.....
