George, Tysons Corner is an "edge city", a mini-metropolis built around a shopping mall (in this case, two malls) west of Washington, D.C. In the case of Tysons Corner, however, it isn't especially "mini" -- there's more office space in the roughly two square miles of Tysons Corner than there is in Washington, D.C.

There are more than a dozen hotels in the area, ranging from the Ritz-Carlton which is built right into Tysons Galleria, to major name and lesser properties along Lee Highway and Chain Bridge Road. If your wife's goal is shopping, there is a Marriott on Lee Highway that is easy walking distance to Tysons Corner Mall, the larger of the two shopping centers.

For such a huge commercial area, Tysons is not served by Metro. There are two Metro stations (West Falls Church is the closer of the two) that are likely served by hotel shuttles, but you will need to verify that the hotel you choose offers such a service. In general, though, this is an area that people drive to rather than depending upon public transportation.

There are ample restaurants in the vicinity, including some excellent names (Morton's of Chicago comes to mind).

We stayed at the Embassy Suites in Tyson's Corners last October. We got a great weekend rate of $100. per night or thereabouts. The Embassy Suites has a shuttle which will take you to the local Malls and to the Metro station. We used it and had no problem. We also drove into DC some of the time and had no problem.

The Ritz Carlton is fantastic and opens directly into Tysons II. Expensive, of course, but quite a treat. A brand new Courtyard by Marriott just opened up directly across the street from Tysons II. You can walk from Tysons I to Tysons II, although you'll have to cross a very busy road to do so. And I believe every hotel in the area has shuttle service to the Metro stations which are about 2-3 miles away. Lots of excellent dining ch oices -- try Taste of Saigon, directly across from Tysons II; highly rated but affordable ... Sam and Harry's ... the aforesaid Morton's ... Legal Seafood ... and Sunday brunch at the Ritz Carlton is not to be missed.

Just got back from a weekend in Washington. We stayed in Alexandria and stopped by "The Fashion Centre Mall" located at the Pentagon City Metro Stop. There is also a small outlet type mall with a large Marshall's across the street. Mall was beautiful, four stories, 160 stores. Next to a Ritz-Carlton. {Much newer than Tysons (it has been years since I was there last)}A very large Macey's and Nordsrom's were the anchors. Your wife might want to try this also. Metro was very easy to use. I suggest getting a $5 all day pass and you won't have to worry about adding up fares. Hope she has fun. My friend and I are already planning another weekend trip there this spring.
