I am considering a trip there this summer, how is the beach, restaurants, crowds, etc. Any tips on which part of island is preferable to stay. Is it any thing like Isle of Palms S.C? Any info. would be appreciated. Thanks

Went out in late January - we were staying in Savannah. We're from Florida so frankly, we were not impressed. But, I guess it depends on what you're looking for. I heard it was very crowded in the Summer.

Very plain and simple motels and houses for rent - nothing fancy - No big hotels

I'd definitely say that it's not worth a trip. Go to Hilton Head if you want to stay in that area.

Several years ago, Tybee was a pretty nice place to go;but times have changed. It's quite run down and nowhere as nice as it used to be. Isle of Palms is CONSIDERABLY nicer than Tybee.

Thanks for the feedback, I may want to go back to looking for places at Isle of Palms. Have stayed there before and love it, just was thinking of something different and Tybee Island may not be it. I appreciate the help.

I'm late, but this is another vote against Tybee. We lived in Savannah for a time, and often made the extra effort to drive to Hilton Head to the beach, an hour + drive, rather than the 20 minutes to Tybee. Overall, it was just that much nicer! It isn't that the beach itself is so bad, it's very similar to HH's beach, or Kiawah's beach (brownish hard packed sand), but the area is kind of tired and the worse for the wear and tear.

We stayed at a hotel on the ocean (can't remember the name" but it was less than impressive. I thought the whole island was runned down. Hilton Head is nice. I highly recommend the Westin on Hilton Head. It was paradise!
