Tybee Island
 

Hi All - Any suggestions on staying here?

I may live in Georgia, but Tybee Island is not that great. Do you have a definite reason for going there?<BR>Why not Sea Island or Jekyll?<BR><BR>

Hey thanks Bob. I simply was looking for something on the Beach and close enough to the convention center.<BR><BR>I'll check out Sea Island and Jekyll!<BR><BR>Any good restaurants I should go to?<BR>Much Appreciated

Hi Kathy... I responded to your inquiry on Tybee hotels earlier ... before I'd read this posting of yours.<BR><BR>It took us (based on 2 yr old memory!)about 40 minutes to get into Savannah from Tybee. Don't know if that would be close enough for your needs. <BR><BR>Tybee is very causal & laid back ... very quiet. No high rise hotels or condos... so Ii guess it depends on what your likes are whether you'd enjoy that envrionment...

The Crab Shack is located on the way to Tybee from the city. It is great, but I would not want to stay at Tybee.

Maybe this will help!<BR>Tybee Island is one of my favorites! It is VERY laid back...quiet and beautiful! We have stayed at the 17th Street Inn twice and loved it...Mattie, the manager, is a bit quircky but extremely nice and considerate. We are in college and went for Spring Break...we didn't want the crowds...anyhow, we wanted to stay longer but didn't have the $, and Mattie cut the cost of another night in half for us. You know Kathy, I was at Jekyll for several days last year. We ate at several places, but to be honest, all were very forgettable and not ones I would happily go to again. I know I suggested Jekyll as an alternative to Tybee, but frankly I was disappointed in most of Jekyll. <BR><BR>My wife has been to several conventions there and she stayed for the better part of a week each time. I asked her the same question about restaurants, and she just shook her head NO. No eating place was betterthan mediocre in her estimation. I don't think we are snobs, it is just that the level of restaurant cooking is poor.<BR>Compared with average places in Holland, Denmark, France, Switzerland, Germany, and Austria there is not much beneficial comparison.<BR>I know many people, particularly the employees of the Jekyll Convention and Visitors Bureau, are not going to like my comments. But so be it. The place strikes me as being over rated, and the restaurant food is uniformly less than good. <BR><BR>Moreover, the last hotel my wife stayed in, because it was convention headquarters, has walls that are so thin she was disturbed by the TV in the adjoining rooms -- from both sides!!<BR><BR>The most satisfactory arrangement my wife made at Jekyll was when she and some of her friends rented a large house for the week. (minimal rental)<BR>The house was expensive, but with 9 people staying there it cut the lodging cost per person to about $150, and each person could do her own meals if she wanted to. <BR><BR>I may get my Georgia citizenship pulled for my comments, but I am not going to be less than truthful in stating my opinion.
