Tybee & Savannah
 

We are visiting in March and staying on Tybee Island. We are planning day trips to Savannah, Brunswick & the Isles and to the Hilton Head area. Any advice or "must see" suggestions would be appreciated.

Beaufort is well worth a visit--be sure and go out to the Penn Center to learn about the Gullah culture.

Bonaventure Cemetery. Just beautiful. Lots of famous and interesting people buried there.

The Crab Shack for she-crab soup on Tybee island.

If you love oysters, Uncle Bubba's, half way between the two, would be a great place for lunch. Some of the best oysters I've had. Freshly shucked, placed on an open-flame grill, squirted with butter/garlic sauce, and topped off with fresh Parm cheese, and with breadsticks to sop up the juices. ((b))

Between Tybee Island and Savannah you will find Ft. Pulaski which was used in the Civil War. DH and I hardly Civil War buffs and we didn't expect much, but Ft. Pulaski was an incredible surprise and we highly recommend it.

When I'm in the area - a visit to the Crab Shack restaurant is a must. I love the boil with shrimp, crab, sausage, corn, etc. The place is very laid back and great to visit.

Another vote for the Crab Shack and Ft. Pulaski. Also, take the carriage tour in Savannah. Oh, and Beaufort is fabulous, as is the Penn Center.

I'll try to answer for HHI. With lots of gated communities, it's not the easiest. I would recommend the cross island expressway to Sea Pines. It costs $5 for the day but a good value to me. Spend time walking around Harbortown and its famous golf course and then follow the signs to South Beach. It's quiet in March but both places have shopping and restaurants. If you like the beach, ask for directions while at South Beach where you can walk to the north as far as you would like.

I agree with Budman regarding Uncle Budda's. It's about 7 miles from the historic center in Savannah and the oysters and seafood gumbo are great. The seafood gumbo is the best we have ever had! Loved the outside seating on the marsh. We took the narrated trolley tour from the information center and while it was good, I know you could see better on the carriage tour.
