Two weeks in Detroit.... where do I start?

My wife and I will be travelling to the USA from the UK. We are excited for our month-long trip. We have our itinerary pretty well down, with a week in New York, a week in Charlestona and Savannah, and two weeks in Detroit. With our time in Detroit, we want to experience life in the heartland, in a real American city. We have our lodging figured out, but what things would you recommend we not miss?

Please, oh please, let this be a joke.

Detroit is not the place to experience the American heartland. It may be a good starting point for a drive westward, but please do not plan on spending two whole weeks in the Detroit area.

Jim, as Spiderman said, hope you aren't serious but if you are, the first thing you need to do is to arm yourself with an Uzi, a couple of auto. 45's and maybe a chainsaw.
If you go, and if you make it, please post again so we will know.

Detroit is a wonderful place for a vacation. Try to schedule it so you're in Detroit for Halloween, which is a particularly festive time of year.

I don't think New York, Charleston, and Savannah are worth visiting, though. There is not much to see in those places. I think you would be better to do a week in Newark, a week in Detroit, and finish it up with two relaxing weeks in Compton.
