Two weeks in Big Isalnd and Maui
 

Hello,

My fiance and I are planning our honeymoon to Hawaii. We will be there for 14 nights and are planning on going to the Big Island and Maui. I'm not sure if we should split the trip up into 7 nights in Kona and 7 nights in Maui or spend more time on one of the islands?

In the Big Island, we plan on going to Kona and spending a night near the Volcano so that we can maximize our time there. I feel like I have a good grasp on the Big Island, but I'm not sure where to stay in Maui. I've read that it might be good to split up the stay in Maui in 2 different locations, but I'm not sure which 2 locations and how much time to spend in each?

Hi, klarat. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding.

What you do depends on what you like (nightlife, snorkeling, etc.), but here's what I would do with 14 days.

Fly into Kona. 3 nights near Kona. (We stayed at a wonderful B&B - will post again with name). Then drive southern route to VNP (stoppint at southern point, other sites)- 2 nights near VNP (I would recommend Kilauea Lodge).
Drive northern route to Kohala Coast (stopping at Akaka Falls, Hawi, etc., on the way). Stay 4-5 nights on Kohala Coast (We loved the Fairmont Orchid).

Then fly to Maui for 4-5 nights. On Maui, I would pick one hotel, either in Kanaapali area or in Southern Maui. Then fly home from there.

Maui is more developed; there are more restaurants; it's busier. So if you're interested in nightlife, you might want to spend more time on Maui.

The Big Island and Kauai are our favorite islands.

Hale Hualalai is the name of the B&B near Kona. It was wonderful.

We stayed in Wailea for our Maui honeymoon; it's a really beautiful area and more romantic than some of the other areas we saw. On the BI, we stayed at the Hapuna Beach Prince - great beach location and then spent a night at the Kilauea Lodge when we went to Volcano National Park. If you do the Kilauea Lodge, be sure to make dinner reservations at their restaurant - it's a charming spot, where you eat by a big stone fireplace. This area can get cool at night, and our little cottage there had a fireplace, which was nice.
