Two visitors on Maui swept out to sea at Olivine pools

It's very sad, but not limited to Hawaii. Just last Sunday, a man was swept out to sea by a "sleeper" wave in Mendocino County, CA.

Also, on the Europe board recently, there was a thread about people who have lost their lives at the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland.
Tragedies like these happen all over the world, not just Hawaii. They happen in places where they have never heard of the "Revealed" books. Bottom line is, none of this happens because of a guide book.

I remember reading about Olivine Pools in Maui Revealed. In the most recent edition, there are two photos of it, with people in the pools (pages 42 and 60 , with a caption "Some deep, some shallow, the Olivine Pools can be a calm playground in a stormy sea" There is a discussion about how safe it is, then a mention to avoid it when surf is higher than 12 feet. I think the authors should get rid of the enticing pictures and flowery description. I also think the authors should pay for a metal sign at the top of the trail warning people that several have died here, and it is not safe.

Too many people ignore the rules that auntiemarie posted, not just in Hawaii, but in many coastal areas. Maybe they are not familiar with oceans with rocky shores, or maybe they are just not familiar with oceans. Posting signs seems like a solution, but it is not always effective. In SF there are numerous signs warning visitors of the strong undertow at Ocean Beach and of the dangers of swimming, but every year we have stories of people be caught in the undertow and of would be rescuers drowning trying to save them.

Paying for a sign is the least they should do. They should also publish in their next editions how many people have died at these places since the books have been published. That might get people's attention.

I think it is a good editorial. Re-reading the Olivine Pools section in Maui Revealed again, it really makes it sound like it's OK as long as there aren't 12 foor swells. I like the other poster's suggestion that the Maui Revealed people should give the number of people who have died at these places that they are highlighting. I'm just so sorry for the families of this young couple. Such a tragedy.

OK, I am going to try once more to help fans of the Revealed Books understand my horror at the lack of responsibility from the authors, Andrew and Harriet.
Picture yourself, your a funloving adventurer, hip on traveling off the beaten path. You are stoked that you found this freakin' cool place that no one has discovered, so, haven found no hawaiin name, you name it yourself.
Olivine Pools.
You run into some old college friends that have never visited the islands. Knowing how freakin' cool this place is you show them pictures and tell them to be careful, could be slippery, but the pools are pristine.
Now a couple of months pass, and you suddenly find out that...
"Mary" fell on the rocks heading down and has a Traumatic Brain Injury which she will likely never truly recover from.
"John" was so stoked at how freakin' cool the place was that he walked closer to the edge then he meant to. Hey, the ocean was pretty calm, and the pools looked pristine. Too bad that half way across the pacific, Japan had an earthquake, sending a rogue wave towards your namesake Olivine
So now your two best friends lives are over. Mary has brain damage from falling on the rocks, and John is dead.
How has this affected you? Two close friends forever changed because you sent them to an off the beaten path, hidden gem.
A few months later you run into another gang from the past that are visiting the islands for the first time.What do you do?
Do you tell them the rocky steep trail can get slippery at times, or do you tell them, if you slip, protect your head at all cost?
Do you tell them in a previous conversation to never turn their back on the ocean? And 12 foot waves can be dangerous even though you know someone has drowned in a much quieter surf. Or do you tell them that your best friend died here a few months ago, because he was naive and wasn't truly aware of the power of the ocean.
Do you take responsability and do your best to make sure your circle of friends understand the power of the ocean and the seasons of the ocean?
Or do you show them pictures of how freakin' cool the spot is and send them out with a suggestion, Hey be careful out there....?
Never underestimate the power of your actions or no actions.

More than "common sense" is needed to be safe in these situations. Expert advice from those who know Hawaii's hidden dangers and mount the rescues all the time is needed to give tourists the knowledge they need to enjoy the islands safely. That might be the most depressing website I've ever seen. It is a tragedy vampire's dream.
Seriously though it does contain info that can be used to make tourists aware of dangers but wow is it depressing.

I think it is eye-opening.
As one who has had a near miss with mother nature in paradise I can really relate.
The story of Larry Ellison breaking his neck reminded me of a situation I got myself into at Hamoa Bay many years ago when I was attempting to body surf like a local. WRONG!
