Two Days in Nashville
 

We will have only two days in Nashville. My husband has already said he would like to tour the "Country Music Hall of Fame". We both enjoy visiting historic homes, but may only have time to see one. We are trying to decide between Bell Meade, The Belmont Mansion, or the Hermitage. Does anyone have "favorites" among those three? I would also appreciate suggestions for lunch.

I love the Hermitage. The house is beautiful and the love story of Andrew and Rachael Jackson is so romantic. They are buried in the garden.

The Parthenon (sp?) replica is very impressive (accross from Vanderbilt U.)

I thought Belle Meade was more impressive than the Hermitage.

I also am looking for historical places to visit close to Nashville.I'm thinking of Franklin area? or Tenn. Walking Horse area - headed towards Lynchburg , I think. Any help would be appreciated.

bwg - Franklin is very pretty and historic, with many homes from the early 1800's and a few from the 1700's. If you are going from Nashville, get off of I-65 at the Brentwood exit, go right until you hit US 31 (Franklin Road), and go south. You will pass several nice Antebellum mansions on the way to Franklin. In Franklin, the downtown area is great for walking - there are several smaller antebellum homes off the square. The Civil War battle of Franklin was fought near the Carter House which is still there, and shows traces of the battle, including a barn with bullet holes. The prettiest home there, IMO, is the Carnton Mansion, a few miles south of downtown, which was used as a hospital and has a Confederate cemetery with hundreds of graves.
If you continue south on 31, you will go through Spring Hill and pass more antebellum mansions. The town of Columbia, in Maury County, was the home of James Polk (it is still there). Maury County has numerous beautiful antebellum mansions.

Bob_KY Thanks so much!!--we'll plan to head towards Franklin--sounds just like what we're looking for. Do you know if Loveless Cafe is on the way out of Nashville?

We went to Franklin via your suggested route & spent several hours at Carnton-very interesting and we really enjoyed it. Thanks for the suggestion!

BWG - You're welcome - sorry I didn't see your other question re: Loveless Cafe - I was at Disney World when you wrote. I don't know if you found it or not, but for future reference you can go to the Loveless Cafe (west of Nashville off Hwy 100) then get on the Natchez Trace Parkway and drive down toward Franklin that way.
When I lived in Nashville, they had outdoor concerts at Carnton in the summer - (they got in trouble for playing Dixie, go figure).
